Can some one recommend me a puberty book for girls that deals with....

I'm looking for a book for dd after she came to me thinking that there was something wrong with her (discharge). She's nearly 11. I had already had "the talk" with her about periods and sex, but obviously hadnt gone into enough detail as I completely forgot to mention discharge, and probably many other things...

This got me thinking how I had some puberty books when I was a preteen, but none of them put my mind at rest, or even mentioned the thing that I was most self conscious about, my uneven labia.

I spent ages thinking that there was something horrendously anatomically wrong with me. It caused me so much stress (pre Internet). And none of these puberty books talked about the fact that labia can be different shapes and sizes.

Basically I want a no holds barred, no skirting around the unsavoury details, down to earth, secular puberty book for girls, that doesn't shy away from mentioning that sex is fun, and masturbation is normal. That goes into detail about the "gross" stuff, and basically everything (including drugs, Internet etc). But I can't seem to find one.. They touch on "every body being unique", but that really didn't help me, when the diagrams all showed perfectly symmetrical clam like genitals.

I'm not fixated on the vulva thing, I don't know what my dd will be self councious about. I can't predict it. I hope I've made it clear that she can talk to me about anything with no embarrassment, and judgement. But it took a lot for her to come to me about the discharge issue, and I'm worried that if there is anything else she's self concious about that she will bottle it up, and it will cause her stress.

I can't possibly predict what may or may not be an issue, so just looking for something which deals with it all!! I know that's a tall order, but does anyone have any good recommendations that I could look into? Might have to get a couple, but would rather she had them, than spent endless nights worrying that there's something wrong with her (as I did!).

I someone knows a better place for this post please let me know :) Tia!

Is there not some exhibition online with lots of pictures of labia

dementedpixie · 10/05/2021 09:20

I dont have a puberty book recommendation though, sorry

Sounds weird but there's some good stuff on TikTok- presented by young, popular women talking frankly and in a positive way with associated positive comments. You can search on hashtags so I'm sure if you did that you can find some to save then show her.

100 vaginas on All4 is the documentary about it

Sorry op, can't help with further recommendations but you sound like a great mum :)

Hannah Witton’s The Hormone Diaries may be helpful. Not puberty specific but is all about period

Southernc0mfortmirror · 10/05/2021 09:40

*periods that should say. She also has a YouTube channel

Being a Girl by Hayley Long, with excellent illustrations by Gemma Correll:

Bought it for both nieces and am about to buy another copy.

@NoSquirrels thank you for the recommendation this is perfect for my daughter

We have The Smart Girl's Guide to Growing Up, which is good. Frank and straightforward.

ThePlantsitter · 10/05/2021 10:09

I've got one called 'wait, what?' which I don't think is particularly for girls but it's very frank and has a gallery of join the dot genitals. It doesn't cover everything you ask for (might not even cover periods) but is really good in combination with other books I think, partly because it is so frank. It has some stuff about gender you might not agree with but I was fine with it because it was only about behaviour and identification not actual surgery or being born in the wrong body.

Includes a really good bit about consent too.

Brilliant, thank u guys. I didn't even think about the fact that there's new mediums out there, so that's one resources they've got now that we didn't have- you tubers and Tik tok posters, I know some of them can be very body positive, even though I'm not really up on them. I will have a look at the links suggested.. All looks really useful.

@theplantsitter I think I will have to use a combination of things as there isn't going to be one thing that covers everything :)

@dementedpixie thank u, I've found all this stuff really helpful since being able to access the Internet. I'm not sure about specifically showing my dd that just yet, as it might not be an issue for her. She might just think why is mum showing me all these vulvas 😅. But u know what I mean, chances are she will have something she thinks is wrong with her, which is actually perfectly normal, just not really discussed. Hopefully,in this day age they can find some helpful, body positive content online.

@plantsitter sorry I meant to say that looks really useful :) I think I'll have to get a range of things to cover everything, as to get the depth it's impossible for one book to have the total range. Would rather buy her a few really decent things, than one that glosses over.
