Do I need to call/email work to let them know I'm on annual leave?

This is a silly question but it's my first job. Blush

Do I need to call or email work/my manager to let them know I'll be absent as I'll be on annual leave?

I've gone through the formal process of applying and being approved my annual leave so it is on the rota that I'm on annual leave. However, do I also need to phone/email in to remind them that I'll be absent as I would if I was unwell?

Thank you

No you don’t.

Kerning · 09/05/2021 11:57

Nope.

I think it's courteous to let your manager know. Also can you set up an automatic 'out of office' reply on your email in case anyone tries to contact you?

2tired2bewitty · 09/05/2021 11:59

No, though if it’s relevant and you can get into your emails from home, putting an out of office response will remind anyone who has forgotten or is unaware.

YourCakesAreShit · 09/05/2021 12:00

Presumably they authorised the leave, so no, I wouldn't think so! If you use Outlook or similar, make sure it's in your calendar, maybe? Or check theirs to see if they've noted the leave. That's what our managers do.

Snap @Orangebug!

I'd expect to have had a brief (less than 5 mins) call with my line manager on the last day at work to explain what the arrangements are in my absence, e.g. I've set my out of office / not expecting anyone to call etc. / Joe Bloggs is dealing with this project in my absence.

But it depends what type of job you have.

lastqueenofscotland · 09/05/2021 12:01

No but the day before I usually send a quick email to everyone in my team with a quick hand over something along the lines of:
I’m off till Thursday have let client X know.
Have actioned Y but not had a response so may need chasing.
Z is due to respond about whatever tomorrow.
See you Thursday

But I’d never call on the day no

IEat · 09/05/2021 12:06

Next time when you leave work before your annual leave pop in to see your manager and say bye, see you in x days/weeks if it’s concerning you .

Vanillaradio · 09/05/2021 12:09

No- its on the rota and been approved by manager. I put my out of office auto reply on with the dates I'll be on leave and who to contact in an emergency. If there's something going to come up whilst I'm away I'll email my manager the day before and let her know.

Notthisnotthat · 09/05/2021 12:11

I normally give my line manager a brief email the day I finish just to explain where I am with certain tasks etc set my out of office message to on saying when I'll be back and who to contact if urgent.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 09/05/2021 12:12

Depends on your work I think. I would have no clue if any of my team had booked leave with hr. if in doubt why not just email your manager and say "by the way I'm on annual leave next week, I assumed you would know but just checking- is there anything you need me to do before I log off?"

flippertygibbit · 09/05/2021 12:28

Aww bless, what a lovely thought. If you've had your days authorised and it's showing on the rota, you don't need to do anything. Have some lovely days off :)

BarbaraofSeville · 09/05/2021 12:36

Totally depends on your work set up. When I take my leave is between me and my manager, so he always knows about it because we've discussed it and he's authorised it on the system.

It doesn't generally involve anyone else unless there's a large project that lots of us work on so another manager might have a say on when I'm at work.

I'm struggling to think of a scenario where a manager wouldn't know in advance/be involved in agreeing to someone being on leave.

bunglebee · 09/05/2021 12:38

When my manager approves a holiday request I send an invite to her calendar with "bungle on holiday" that covers the relevant days. Then I just stick my out of office on and brief anyone who's covering anything for me.

MorganSeventh · 09/05/2021 12:43

My work, we likewise send a calendar invite with xx on leave to line managers. It's a courtesy really because they should know, but with everyone working from home at the minute there's less chance for incidental chat about plans and it's more likely to slip their minds.

LIZS · 09/05/2021 12:48

Put an "out of office" auto reply on your email with a contact for urgent queries

After my leave is approved I send it as a calendar invite to my manager so it’s in both of our calendars. If it’s a week or more I send an email on the last day detailing what I’ve done and any upcoming deadlines/what can be left until I return.
