Do you have an all-consuming hobby?

I don't really.
I do a few things (in non pandemic times) like music, gardening, book groups etc but nothing that is an over-arching MAJOR hobby that others would say "Oh yes, Llama's into XYZ..."

I've been selling some old family stuff on ebay and I've discovered there are massive communities for all sorts of things e.g. vintage dolls, coins, badges etc.

My DH has cycling as a major hobby which consumes him (yes, I know, it's a cliche!)

I feel a bit sad that I don't have a particular 'thing' I'm passionate about.
Anyone else feel like this?

@MyBeloved

Horses.

Nothing more to say, really!

Snap

It’s exhausting juggling with work and toddler. Wouldn’t change it but not sure I’d recommend it either.
Although slightly jaded by another stint of box rest Hmm

I do sometimes long for a different life although it doesn’t last.

don't be sad OP, you are balanced and normal. I love cooking, gardening and walking. I also really enjoy my job and love spending time with my family. I am not obsessed with any of these thing which I think makes me quite normal.
SionnachRua · 08/05/2021 22:47

Yes! Poledancer here. Pole has the best community I've ever seen, very diverse and welcoming.

I also love letter writing which is nice as you can pick up a letter at any stage. Not weather or season dependent.

Polkadotties · 08/05/2021 22:54

Horse. He is on full livery so I get more time to do other things but it costs a lot of money.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 08/05/2021 22:59

Singing is my hobby. I only started lessons to gain a bit of confidence when singing in church (or happy birthday if needed). But I love it so 2 years later and I'm still having 1-1 lessons, have joined a choir and am in the church worship band. Also an hour a day of practice.

MyBeloved · 08/05/2021 23:00

Love the way all the equestrians pop up on the 'all consuming hobby' thread Grin

There's nothing like it.

Can so relate to the poster who said she was staring at her horse gormlessly while he ate earlier. Think we all do similar on a regular basis 🤣

VetOnCall · 08/05/2021 23:14

Gundog training/competing with my dogs (not so much a hobby as life revolves around them)
CrossFit
Trail running
Hiking
Rock climbing

Most people I know would associate me with the dogs plus at least one more of the above. Also with adventure travel as in normal times I do at least one big trip a year although that's not really a "hobby" per se.

GlumyGloomer · 08/05/2021 23:15

Creative writing. It's not all consuming in the sense that I devote large chunks of time to it on a regular basis, but it occupies any spare thinking time I get. It's also something I simply can't quit. Even when it's been a year and I've not written a thing (because kids) my brain never stops working on my ideas. I'm currently writing a novel on my phone, because that's all I've got and it's better than not writing.

Fkrkrodps · 08/05/2021 23:19

Genealogy. I could spend all day every on it and thousands of pounds, if I had the time and money.

Ted27 · 08/05/2021 23:50

I wouldnt call it all consuming but my allotment takes a lot of my time
I love spending time there, its a very peaceful place. Its nice to sit and listen to the birds , watch the butterflies and bees, play spot the frog.

Theres a sense of achievement in growing things from seed, its good eating things you’ve grown within hours of picking it, particularly strawberries and raspberries. There’s always something new to learn, last year I made jams and preserves for the first time, this year I’ll be learning how to save seeds.
Probably saved our sanity during lockdown

I used to do amateur theatre obsessively - I would be at rehearsal between 3 and 6 days a week from the age of 16, kept acting and directing all the way through university and law school until I started a job aged... I guess 24... which meant I had to regularly work evenings.

I miss it a lot but I still have a demanding job and now two small children. I have never really managed to replace it but I am trying! I quilt, train my gun-dog puppy every day and after a long break, I am trying to get back into writing. I started with a blog for a national organisation, then a poem for a family wedding... started to remember how much I enjoy it! Novel next... Grin

It’s actually probably more balanced now than the obsessive hobby I had before!

Annoy · 09/05/2021 00:05

Compulsive reader.

Three today.

Athinginitself · 09/05/2021 01:08

Sewing my own clothes. Find it pretty addictive, spend a lot of time thinking about it, like that I dont have to leave the house, love nice fabrics and learning new things, like being able to do little bits at a time, also crocheting and crossstitch with the tv on.

MinnieKat · 09/05/2021 01:11

My ferrets.

memberofthewedding · 09/05/2021 01:36

My all consuming "hobby" is selling vintage online but its also an important source of income for me.

I have been involved in the antiques world since the 1960s - first as a collector and later in the 1970s I began dealing part time at antique fairs. That lapsed in the 1980s when I returned to education for some years. In the late 1990s when I was working in the USA I became aware of Ebay and opened a shop on there shortly after I returned to the UK. I began selling there full time when I retired in 2004 and followed up by opening shops on other more classy platforms to build a brand.

Its fair to say that it now takes up most of my time and is my reason to get out of bed in the morning.

ConsuelaHammock · 09/05/2021 02:16

Gardening, crochet , my houseplants and paper cutting. I need some more active hobbies.

N0PE · 09/05/2021 02:22

Cross stitching. 8 hours a day stitching. Many more hours chatting to other stitchers. Then time spent looking for new patterns/fabric/threads. Grin

You can’t open a cupboard or drawer in my living room without finding it full of stitchy stuff!

ErykahBaddy · 09/05/2021 02:24

Maybe that's the problem - I like variety. I think I'd get bored doing the same thing lots of the time?

I definitely like variety and I've had many different hobbies come and go over the years because I just love trying new things, but I've also had one or two that have stuck with me, that I never get bored of.

People would definitely say "oh Erykah is into...", but that's not necessarily because it's "all consuming" in my experience. More likely just because it's something slightly out of the norm, or even more commonly it's just if you sometimes have to turn down invitations because you're doing your hobby, friends quickly notice!

For me it's diving. I only actually go diving every few weeks, maybe 20 times a year on average. That's not really much for a hobby, is it? Just 20 times a year. But because it involves travel, often a day or two away at a time, and it's something not TONS of people do, and because I also have to do courses and I like reading or listening about it, etc. my friends and family obviously know it's something I'm "into". But it's not all consuming. I still have lots of time for other hobbies and interests too.

julietmanchester · 09/05/2021 02:54

Piano.

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 09/05/2021 03:52

I do Ann Stokes Diamond Art Paintings, which I love anything Gothic, are so time consuming as some of them are massive. I also run a online community for a well known music group and that in it self is really busy trying to keep everything updated and moderated.

Pyewackect · 09/05/2021 03:58

@MyBeloved

Horses.

Nothing more to say, really!

Horses too but not “all-consuming” as I don’t have the time.

I'll represent for the people who have classic cars. In normal years the show season is roughly May to October. Probably at least two weekends a month, although 2019 was an anniversary year for us and we had events most weekends. Shows, drives, gatherings. We have models of our cars and car-related artwork at home.
