Sweat debate with dp

nevernotstruggling · 08/05/2021 13:20

I think you/anyone can smell unpleasant pretty much immediately after sweating.

Dp insists you can't and bo is caused by not washing and or wearing clean clothes. Dp thinks if you wash and wear clean clothes every day you don't need anti perspirant as this will prevent it.

I disagree.

FYI this isn't a stealth aibu about dp. He has no personal hygiene issues.

He is talking rubbish.

My dp sweats but doesn't smell. Ever. If I forget deodorant I can smell bo on me after a while

FelicityBeedle · 08/05/2021 13:52

Fresh sweat doesn’t smell unpleasant, dirty clothes do. He’s right

Unless he is going to wash and change his clothes 2-3 times a day his sweat will begin to smell

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 08/05/2021 14:18

Sweat doesn’t smell like BO immediately but you can’t go a day with no anti-perspirant/deodorant.

FindingMeno · 08/05/2021 14:20

I think everyone is different.

NannyR · 08/05/2021 14:25

Fresh sweat doesn't smell, it's when it reacts with bacteria on your skin and clothes that you get BO. I use a deodorant that reduces bacteria growth on your skin but doesn't stop you sweating and I don't smell bad. During exercise I have a "fresh sweat" sort of smell which is different to BO.

Oldraver · 08/05/2021 14:25

My FIL was a proponent of "sweat is natural, anti-perspirant blocks the pores and is bad for you"

He stunk to high heaven, so did MIL who also didnt use anything or wash much

But everyone is different, my OH rarely smells or sweats much though does use roll on

Jobseeker19 · 08/05/2021 14:27

Fresh sweat doesn't smell so I agree with your DH.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 08/05/2021 14:32

My DH showers daily, but doesn't use anti-perspirant, and wears the same top for several times before washing it. He never smells.

I, on the other hand, am perimenopausal and I have to shower daily, scrub my pits with soap, use deodorant AND change my clothes daily, and I still sometimes catch a slight whiff of BO coming off me. I don't know what the answer is.

Namenic · 08/05/2021 14:37

I think different people are different.

I've met plenty of folk like that boak.

Dp doesn't abs has never had bo.

I work in a job where I sometimes need to assess either personal hygiene or basic care - this is what the debate arose from

I agree that fresh sweat doesn’t smell but for most people it starts to smell after a couple of hours, so just showering once a day and wearing clean clothes won’t be enough.

Some people are lucky enough that they don’t really smell, but they’re a minority.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/05/2021 14:52

I agree with your DP. Not everyone smells bad without antiperspirant or immediately after exercise, but regular washing is important. However, there have been several threads on MN about people who would smell bad not that long after having a shower who then moved from using shower gel to using soap and found they smelt less.

SelkieFly · 08/05/2021 14:53

yeh, he's talking rubbish.

I shower everyday, wear clean clothes every day, but I took a very difficult phone call the other day and within minutes of putting down the phone, I got a whiff of myself. I'd come out in a stress pong.

It was worse than if Id done exercise, but yeh, if I run for the bus, I'd sweat a bit, and I don't think I'm abnormal. I think my level of sweating is about average as it is an bodily function to lower temperature so we all do it.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 08/05/2021 14:57

My sweat smells straight away it's awful and very few deodorants work. My current one is £15 a bottle. And its not a lack of soap issue.
