removal of Mirena IUD with no strings

Has anyone done this?
I had an ultrasound and it's apparently in my uterus but they can't get the strings. It was bad enough when they were poking around. Now I need to come back and they need to pass instruments into my uterus to get a hold of it. I'm slightly freaking because it sounds ridiculously painful! I am not a woman who tolerates this stuff well, having the IUD inserted was excrutiating (but quick at least).

I got mine removed under general anaesthetic as they couldn't get hold.of the strings

You need to ask for some kind of anaesthetic, even if it is just midazolam which is waking sedation. Its very painful and just not possible without anaesthetic of some kind.

Have they referred you to somewhere/someone who is more experienced? Where are you based? My IUD the strings had disappeared so my GP sent me to a Dr who is a specialist in contraception. I was so scared as the insertion had been awful but she whipped it out and got the new one in with pretty much zero pain! It was incredible. Let me see if I can find her name...Dr Tina Peers, based in the SE or was about 6 years ago. If you can get a referral to her you're in good hands.

For mine though I think the strings must have still been in my cervix rather than up in my uterus.

Definitely demand some anaesthetic, it's disgusting what women are expected to put with and endure for procedures like this.

The gynae department at the hospital couldn't remove mine which is when I got referred to get it out under GA. Gynae department had a good rummage about first with no anaesthetic.

A bit of my mirena broke off - an arm of the t bar bit- and the hospital gynae dept had to get it out. They asked if I was happy for them to have a rummage and see if they could get it out one way, and if not possible they would then do a GA to get it out. Luckily the rummage worked. I sat in a chair with stirrups, and they had some sort of machine wishing water around - think meant to relax the cervix or something. Was uncomfortable, but not painful for me - but apparently I may have a tolerance for pain! Luckily the got it out ok. Bastard thing!

Not in UK and use the private healthcare system here as a foreigner. I think I should be able to insist on GA then (since I'm paying!). Now I feel a bit calmer - they can knock me out and get the bastard thing out.

I had this done recently-I went to have it removed and they couldn’t find the strings, I then got referred to a clinic miles away. It was pretty horrific to be honest. They put an injection into my cervix to open it and some numbing stuff and also gas and air. It still hurt like hell. They eventually found it with the device he was using but he was basically just rummaging around whilst I sat in stirrups and whimpered! They were just about to call it a day and arrange for another appointment to come back where they would use cameras to locate it but luckily did find it. A general anaesthetic wasn’t offered at any point!

dementedpixie · 08/05/2021 10:31

It was a hysteroscopy I had under GA. I wasn't offered it under local anaesthetic

Windmill22 · 25/06/2021 06:53

My Mirena iud strings are lost I have seen local nurses and a gynaecologist at local hospital nobody could remove it and all this was extremely painful yes we are expected to endure too much with this product - I now need to have a general anaesthetic to have a camera put in to remove it. I’m appalled I would not recommend this and wonder if anyone has complained to Mirena itself ? Over the safety of this product.

Windmill22 · 25/06/2021 06:56

I am also having a hysteroscophy but I was offered local or general I pushed for general no way could I do all that under local always insist at the hospital
