Scared I'm making a terrible mistake

Hello,
I'm after advice and possible hand holds. Since last October, DP and I have resolved to move out of London to the coast. We had a plan set up.

  • sell flat
  • I'd get a job in area
  • partner would commute short term
  • we would enrol young primary school aged DC in school once we moved (end of academic year)

I've been incredibly proactive and sent CVs out to agencies and schools. And found two jobs that sounded perfect. I had the interviews this week and didn't get either Sad

An offer was made in our flat which we've accepted but it's hard to feel excited when I don't have a job to go to. I've spoken to agencies but they can't guarantee anything in September. I'm worried about handing in my notice with no job to go to. Plus the fear that there won't be jobs after the half term deadline. I feel so demotivated and am utterly miserable. SadSad
I don't want to pull out of sale as we can't afford to buy anything bigger in London - hence the move. But am scared about moving with no job. Has anyone been in this position? How did it work out for you?
I can't sleep, hence the 5am post.
Thanks for reading

You’ve just been rejected for 2 jobs, that’s tough. And has created a bit of panic.

Try to focus on the longer term ‘why’ you are making this move....bigger house, better quality of life etc.

I’m not sure what you do for a job, but in all likelihood you will get something very soon. Job hunting sucks ass but you only need one to work out....it could be the next one. Perseverance is your friend right now

Thanks for replying. You're right. I'm trying to focus on the why we're doing this.

I'm a teacher. I have to hand my notice in by half term for a new job September start. This might mean they'll be lots of jobs available. But it might not Sad

Could you do supply teaching down there or something like that while you continue to look for a permanent job?

Sippinongingernjuice · 08/05/2021 05:29

Supply teaching often leads to a permanent job. Get set up with 2/3 different agencies to ensure work. If you’re on any of the teaching groups on Facebook you could ask folk which the most popular agencies are for the area that you are planning to move to.

Good luck. I’m sure you’ll find a fabulous new job and enjoy living by the sea!

I think covid has meant the job market for teachers is quite static at the moment in some areas. I'm a governor and some governor were reporting over 100 applicants for a vacancy which is unheard-of. But I'm sure it will go back to normal soon. What do you teach? Are you trying to avoid a career break for pension sake? Or can you take a term off?

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 08/05/2021 05:51

I am an English teacher but have worked in SEN for the last 13 years - I was hoping to remain in that area but may end up looking to mainstream. There are no jobs at present as deadlines have passed so I'll have to wait until after half term.
Taking a term off is an option. I did consider it with DP back in October. It will mean I can support kids with their transition to a new school. Thanks all.

Is it an area of high unemployment? Is there a Jobs' Bureau or Employment Agency you could consult to find out how difficult it is to get any job there? What about English Language Schools or private coaching?

Cuntryhouse · 08/05/2021 06:11

We've just done it. It took 3 months to find a new job and start work. It was depressing, but the relocation was the right thing to do and everything is going really well. Your new life sounds fantastic, and if anyone can get a job it's an English teacher.

Pleaseaddcaffine · 08/05/2021 07:01

When I ws a child my mom did this but taught English in prisons during the transition (gcse).
There are non typical options for a term eg supply, tutoring, prisons, etc etc
Good luck with the move

daisybrown37 · 08/05/2021 07:20

I know it is scary, but there is still time for movement in teaching, there will be last minute resignations later this month and if you can start in September you will be at an advantage.

Supply is a good back up option.

Mumdiva99 · 08/05/2021 08:11

Take a term off and get settled in the new house, new area and help the kids settle. Good luck.

coffeefi · 08/05/2021 08:16

Good luck. Moving house and changing jobs and relocating out of london are huge and scary life changing things. All at once. And you have kids to support so very scary for you.

Hold tight and stay strong. These things have a way of working out in the end.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 08/05/2021 08:49

Thanks so much everyone. You've been helpful and supportive.
I've just had a chat with DP (and some sleep) and I'll resign at half term and hope more job opportunities come up but if not I'll take a term off and help kids transition and do supply.
Thanks for offering perspective Smile
