Ok Tuesday we had some really bad news. I'm obviously really worried about it. Since then I've had this uncomfortable feeling in my chest. I haven't felt like this before. Has anyone else?

It's most definitely anxiety. It can make your chest feel very tight and heavy, your throat, too. Try to go for a long walk which will help to burn off the cortisol in your blood which is causing the anxiety. Deep breathing can help, too.

Sorry you had bad news, is it about your health. Stress and anxiety can give you pain, perhaps you can call 111 for advice or for an ambulance if you are feeling unwell.

I meant to add. I am constantly uncomfortable in my chest. I'm going about my day, going to work, etc but it's always there. DH says it's the affect of the stress on my body from the bad news but even thought I am really worried Im not sat in a corner, a mess, just thinking about it all day or anything. I'm still laughing, joking with the kids. It's just always at the back of my mind.

I have felt anxiety but never like this before. That's what's baffled me. I will try some deep breathing now. Thanks.

Definitely anxiety, it can make you feel so unwell!
In the past I've had racing heart, chest pains, tight feeling, palpitations. The palpitations are the worst because they feel so strange. Sorry you are having a bad time Flowers

It's not unusual for difficult emotions to present as physical symptoms; a heavy chest, a lump in your throat, loss of appetite, or chest pain. Sometimes it helps to let it out, so to speak. Talk honestly with someone close to you about the emotions you're feeling or have a big cry. I'm sorry you're having a difficult time. Flowers

If it doesn't improve, gets worse or is on one side with shortness of breath then get it checked or call 111.

If it came on straight after the bad news, I think your husband is correct.

What else do you think it could be - have you a specific worry?

I would perhaps try to let your feelings out a bit, have you had much of a cry or a rant at all?

Flowers for you

Whenever I'm under stress I get the feeling that I can't take a full breath, so I'm constantly trying to fill my lungs. It's hugely uncomfortable, really worrying and happens all the time - not just when I consciously think about the stressors.

But when the stress goes away, so does the feeling.

So I echo what everyone else has said - it will be a physical manifestation of your stress.

I’m suffering with this at the moment. It first came on after a really traumatic time and has re-emerged as the situation has re-emerged. I spoke to the GP urgently because my dad died of a heart attack in his 40s, so she gave me an ECG and a thorough check up as a reassurance, but it was all fine. Anxiety, she said, which matched my mental state. I’ve never felt physical symptoms till the last few months.

hippidyhiphip · 07/05/2021 20:15

100% anxiety. I get a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, a sense of impending doom, lump in my chest. I grind my teeth and bite the inside of my mouth too until it bleeds.

hippidyhiphip · 07/05/2021 20:16

I've also been in severe physical pain before from anxiety in my stomach. Ended up having all sorts of tests which came back negative. Started on anti anxiety meds and within a month it went. Came off the meds and it came back.
My severe anxiety started after a family member became poorly.

Squeejit · 07/05/2021 20:17

Yes @devildeepbluesea, that’s it. Sometimes it makes me almost crave a cigarette even though I haven’t smoked in years. My Fitbit often reads a higher heart rate too.
It’s like a lump in my chest almost.

SmileyClare · 07/05/2021 20:21

You could try a long bath, concentrate on deep slow breathing, count each breath and try to empty your mind of thoughts. That may ease the uncomfortable feeling. Is it better when you first wake in the morning?

Bear in mind that chest pain should be taken seriously if it's effecting your breathing, moves down your arms or jaw or you feel sick. Sorry I don't want to add to your anxiety but it's quite easy to ring 111 and run through your symptoms if the pain is in itself worrying you.

DogsSausages · 07/05/2021 20:46

If you are constantly uncomfortable in your chest it might be worth getting it checked out, no one here can say its definitely anxiety without you having tests done.

ALevelhelp · 07/05/2021 20:52

I'm in agreement with everyone else, it definitely sounds like anxiety. I've suffered with years and the chest heaviness is by far the hardest for me to deal with Sad

Walking helps me x

Hope you feel better soon. When you're ready, maybe talk to someone about the bad news you heard? It may not help but worth a go xx

treatable · 08/05/2021 02:52

Thank you everyone. I've woken up in the middle of the night - it's nearly 3am and still have that feeling. I tried a bit of deep breathing which did take the edge of it slightly but its back to how it was again.

From what others have said , the feeling went away when the stressor went away - that can't happen with me due to the nature of the problem - I'm worried I'm not going to be able to get rid of it and make myself ill or something. I'll try going for a walk tomorrow to see if it improves.

Anxiety is crap. 💐 for anyone else suffering.

Yep that sounds like anxiety.
Ashwaghanda, magnesium and b vitamins are your new friend.
And don't forget to breathe and distract. Thanks

Ismailia · 09/05/2021 06:23

Thanks Aldilogue I'll look up those. Is the vitamin b a specific one or a vit b tablet with all of them ok?

bellropes · 09/05/2021 08:51

Beta blockers can help with this feeling, so go see your GP. Also, avoid caffeine and too much sugar and carbs. I hope you feel better soon.
