Firm mattress for someone with SI/lower back pain. Recommendations

My mattress is knackered. I need a new one.

I've experienced foam mattresses which make my lower back pain so so so much worse - even with perseverance.

I need a firm mattress and happy to spend money getting a good one.

Any recommendations

We just got a Simba mattress, I get lower back pain, and it has been amazing. Worth every penny.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 07/05/2021 17:48

Is it firm? Or it a foam mattress?

I’ve got an Ikea Hokkasen which I really love. I do have the medium but they have a firm version also which is very firm!

Ikea is open now so you can go and try them, although be aware if you go to the Warrington one the firm one has been bounced on quite a lot!

I tried the Emma original. Reviews online said firm. It was waaay to soft for me. Sent it back. Got the Bella hybrid from carpet right. it's like sleeping on a warmed up floor. It's perfect although it is a combination of memory foam and something else.

That's really helpful info.

When you say 'warmed up floor' does it increase your heat?
I hate being hot and my room is boiling in the summer so maybe memory foam is genrally a bad idea?

It's foam and springs. I find it nice and firm, but it's not dead hard or anything. I read the Emma mattress is quite hot as well...

I have chronic SI & lower back problems and I bought one of these IKEA mattresses just over a year ago (the firm version). It has been great, my back pain on waking up has practically disappeared since getting it. Such a relief as I wasn't sure if my back was getting worse, or whether it was my sagging old mattress causing the issue. It felt a bit like sleeping on a slab of rock at first though (bliss for me, others may not like it).

If I'm on my own I'm ok but if my son jumps in it's like an oven

I have the firm HYLLESTAD from IKEA. It has made so much difference to my SI, pelvis and lower back pain.

DH & I both have back problems and we bought an Emma mattress earlier this year. We both found it much too firm! Decided to persevere and try the free softer topper and it's now very comfy. I don't want to get out of bed in the morning Grin

My point is really that it's worth trying different mattresses as it may take time to find the one that suits you. It's good that lots of the boxed ones offer a trial Smile

Thanks, I'm just looking into these now.

The only thing with the IKEA ones, aren't they a slightly different size to English sizes so might not fit my bed frame?

I swear by the premier inn mattresses - perfect!

I've an ikea hovag one after recommendations on mn. It seemed hard as a board at the start but has broken in / we got used to it after a few weeks. Ikea do uk dimension mattresses as well as eu ones. Ours is uk king and fits just fine

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 08/05/2021 10:11

I just bought the Simba one, I got a 40% Blue light discount so it was a no-brainer with the ability to send it back if it's no good.

Thanks for your help.

If it’s no good - no Ikea do UK sizing of both mattresses and bedding now.

PickAChew · 09/05/2021 00:15

How heavy are you? Thinking has changed on firm mattresses for back pain. Always suffered doe to hypermobility but changing to a soft sprung one, as I'm under 11 stone, has made so much difference.
