DS 7 low blood sugar symptoms in the morning

Hi, I am worried about my 7 year old ds. He has woken up a few mornings in the last month feeling shakey, crying and having no energy to the point he has shuffled downstairs because he feels so drained. After eating he starts to feel better but takes over an hour to feel completely recovered. Last night he had a decent sized healthy dinner and an ice lolly after. He has a decent diet. Probably the healthiest diet of all the kids I know. He has also been complaining of headaches recently. Does anyone know what this could be? I'm waiting a call back from the doctor but that might not be until Monday now. Thanks.

Early symptoms of diabetes perhaps?

Oh and take him somewhere to be seen today a walk in centre etc or perhaps even pharmacist can test a urine sample.

Thanks for replying. I thought diabetes was high blood sugar though? Sorry if that's totally ignorant I can't say I know much about diabetes.

It does seem like it could be hypoglycaemia after not eating all night, there are other causes of hypoglycaemia other than diabetes and it would be strange for him to be getting hypoglycaemia as an undiagnosed diabetic when he would normally have high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia). I’d get him to the gp and for now give him something carby right before bed to last him through the night e.g toast or cereal

Thanks for replying. This can't be normal though can it? My daughter has the same food and doesn't have this problem. I really hope the gp calls back soon.

No it’s not normal but if that is what it is it can be managed. I had a friend at uni who had a health condition where her blood sugar would drop low and she had to manage it by eating regularly. The most important thing though is to find out if that is what it is and if there is an underlying cause or just how his body works.

Thank you, @Trisolaris the doctor just rang and they are seeing him Monday but did say it might just be he needs a snack before bed.
