Book recommendations for 9yo ds

VenusClapTrap · 07/05/2021 13:09

It’s ds’s birthday next week and he’s said he wants a big pile of books as his present, but I’m not getting very far extracting titles from him, and time is running out!

Any suggestions? He liked the Treehouse series, fantasy stuff about dragons, David Walliams etc. His favourite book of all time is The Neverending Story.

Thanks!

Maudlin Towers by Chris Priestley
Has he read all the How to Train your Dragon series?
Subscription to The Phoenix comic

He's probably old enough for Alex Rider at 9yo.

VenusClapTrap · 07/05/2021 14:53

He’s already read all the How to Train Your Dragon series, and he’s getting a subscription to The Phoenix from my Dad for his birthday.

Will put Maudlin Towers and Alex Rider on the list. Thanks!

Edge Chronicles?

VenusClapTrap · 07/05/2021 17:05

He’s read some of those; I’ll ask him if he’d like more.

My 9yo has been really into the Wolf Brother series. Percy Jackson is good too. She also liked Tbe Hobbit.

Havenholidayhelp · 07/05/2021 17:25

Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, spiderwick chronicles, Mr Gum

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 07/05/2021 18:08

Cressida Cowell has written another series since HTTYD but the name escapes me at the moment, something beginning with W!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 07/05/2021 18:10

How to train your dragon

The boy who grew dragons

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 07/05/2021 18:12

Michael Morpurgo is always good (mainly animal stories)
Roald Dahl (stating the obvious)
Hunger Games trilogy for something a bit darker
Lemony Snicket!

thespiderwife · 07/05/2021 18:15

My son absolutely loves the Beast Quest series by Adam Blade. He is 11 now and has read these books since he was 7/8. Books are continuing to be written and he continues to ask for the series when they are released.

VenusClapTrap · 07/05/2021 18:36

Thanks for all these suggestions. A lot of them he’s already read, but there are quite a few he hasn’t tried yet so this is really helpful.

Hank Zipzer series by Henry Winkler, The Highland Falcon and the California Comet (Adventures on Trains series). My ten year old has also recently started reading the Cherub series (by Robert Muchamore) - has some swearing in it but very good and there are about 18 books in the series!

Havenholidayhelp · 07/05/2021 19:44

Holes, Horrible Histories books, Treehouse authors have also done Just kidding, Just Annoying. Davied Baddiel books are good Animalcolm, Future Kid, Turbochaser etc

I read these as a child and really enjoyed them.

Paul Jennings is great, btw. Short stories with a twist in the tail.

BikeRunSki · 07/05/2021 19:51

The Artemis Fowl series by Eion Cofflet
Alex Rider series
Perfect Jackson series

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, but they might be too young

The other series by Cressida Cowell mentioned by @SocraticJunkieWannabe is The Wizards of Once.

BikeRunSki · 07/05/2021 19:53

The “My Brothers Famous Bottom” series by Jeremy Stong

Flat Stanley

The modernised Jennings books

capercaillie · 07/05/2021 19:58

Wizards of once is the other series by Cressida Cowell. 4 books. It’s really good!
