Puppies and early mornings

I have a 17 week old red setter who sleeps from 10pm until 5.15 every day, but then he is up for the day. Won’t go back in the crate without barking the place down and I have twins (5) who I don’t want waking so respond to him quickly. When he wakes he does always go out for a wee and poo so obviously does need to go. Does this change with time or are we just stuck with an early riser? Confused

I should add I know no one can know whether we are stuck with an early riser but wanted to hear other’s experiences.

Our dog is 18 months now, high energy breed and gets up when we do but quickly puts himself back to bed while we get ready for the day. At 17 weeks he was during the night ans early morning so the fact yours sleeps through is a good sign.

My standard poodle was the same I gradually extended wake up time by 10 mins a day to 6.15am, by ignoring him for 10 mins.

It gets better, ours is 16 months now and sleeps from last pee about 9pm to usually 8.30 am but frequently later. I was on here asking the same question.

When she was a puppy, I don’t necessarily recommend this but it worked for us, she was a bitey little shit after her morning pee about 5.30am till I started putting her back in bed with us and she’d go straight back to sleep...after a cuddle.

Extending wake up time by 10 minutes a day....is a good idea.

Thank you for the replies. We have been lucky so far with him sleeping through. Perhaps I should realise that more and just suck up the early mornings! The breeder used to feed her every morning at 6 so I guess it’s in built. Perhaps we will have to look at stretching it out as she gets a bit older if it doesn’t naturally change.

@BeechTreeView yep, bitey here too! That’s the thing. I am a morning person, before getting him I was up having a coffee at 5 but now as I get bitten and have to constantly fend him off I would rather be in bed 😁. He is a gorgeous dog. I just need to embrace that there are no relaxing mornings for a while. And don’t get me started on the dog witching hour in the evenings that I wasn’t aware of pre-pup!

I have two spaniels ( litter mates). Mine were not crated but one was an early riser, from dawn or 5am in the winter. Always needed the toilet and would rarely resettle. His brother was the opposite, would not move until 10am if left but is up because of his brother. They are 11 now and still the same. If I give them breakfast they will resettle or come and have a cuddle with me & DH. or eldest dc. I usually get up in the spring & summer months and go for a walk with them, see the sunrise, wildlife etc it’s my favourite time of the day. Which is probably why he still does it.Grin.

I should add mine never barked though just faff enough to disturb.

It gets better. Ours used to be up before 6. Now she gets up when we do during the week (6:30) but happily sleeps in until 7:30 - 8 at weekends. She's 7 months

Irishterrier · 07/05/2021 06:17

17 weeks is still a real baby. I think he'll sort himself out over the next few months

TTCat39 · 07/05/2021 06:26

I agree with others - The early mornings will get later over time. Our pup was the same but now at 3 years old she's still as mad as a hatter in the daytime but loves her sleep too.

Cherrysoup · 07/05/2021 07:08

I used to get up at 4, toilet the puppy then put him between us til I had to get up for work at 6. He settled immediately once shoved between us. He was crated overnight otherwise. Don’t know if that would work for yours, would he be too excited?

BeechTreeView · 07/05/2021 07:45

Bitey and mad hour in the evening was usually tiredness, it does get better, but we’d give ours a cuddle and encourage her to sleep or pop her in her bed.

We have a Lab, and he too was an early riser. Now he's 5, and he'll get up for his morning wee, have breakfast, then toddle back to bed. It gets much better! His bitey phase was terrible as well, he was relentless. But with time and redirection that also went away.

SoapyChoc · 07/05/2021 08:14

We have a 7 month old lab who would randomly sometimes be up at 5am. Over the last few weeks she now mostly sleeps until I get up.

All of the above comments give me some reassurance. Thank tou!

It gets better, we have two poo crosses and they love their bed, they go down for a wee at 8am and then go back to bed until 11am! Then they snooze constantly in between playing. They run and hide when we get their leads out Grin
