Is anyone awake, should I ring 111

Dd 9 has been
Complaining of taper throat for 2 days. Tonight she has been awake last hour crying that throat is sore and can't swallow. Dads working away and I'm really worried with no one to get opinion from. Should I wait until morning for gp or call out of hours

Yes call NHS Direct. Nothing wrong with getting advice and if it’s nothing to worry about, it will at least put yours and DD’s mind at rest.

DramaAlpaca · 07/05/2021 01:52

If you are worried then call. I wouldn't take a risk with a child's health. Have you given her painkillers?

Not sure what 'taper throat' is though - is it a thing or a typo?

RainOnMe79 · 07/05/2021 01:54

Sorry sore throat not taper. Thanks I'm going to call 111 just didn't want to look to be overreacting

Has she had any pain relief at all? If not maybe try that and see if it kicks in and she feels more comfortable.

If she's visibly distressed and in a lot of pain it might be worth calling 111 but I'd see how she goes after some paracetamol/ibuprofen as it's only a few hours till the GP will be open.

Poor little love, sore throats are awful and it's such a worry when they're unwell isn't it.

DramaAlpaca · 07/05/2021 01:56

If you've a sick child you're not over reacting. Better safe than sorry. Hope she's feeling better very soon.

RainOnMe79 · 07/05/2021 02:13

Torvi · 07/05/2021 03:04

You did the right thing. Has the doctor called back yet?

RainOnMe79 · 07/05/2021 03:05

Thank you everyone. Everything seems so much worse in middle of night especially with DH working
Away. Dr not called back yet but she does seem a little better.

I have a horrible sore throat and cough, as do my three DCs, it’s like swallowing glass. Things that help, inhaling steam/hot shower, hot drinks, strepsils, ibuprofen, being propped upright, lots and lots of fluids.

Seems to be a lot of it going around. I’ve literally had no voice for two days, it’s agony. Hope your DD is feeling better soon.

HeartvsBrain · 07/05/2021 03:11

When the Dr calls back please reiterate to him thst she HSS been having regular painkillers and that it was still so bad she felt like she couldn't swallow. Good luck, hope she is feeling a lot better, very soon.

HeartvsBrain · 07/05/2021 03:12

Has not HSS!

I know it's old school but we find a hot toddy is miraculous for throats. Without the whiskey for children. boulderlocavore.com/glasgow-hot-toddy/

The cloves are pain killers (really), the hot water soothes and opens the throat up, the honey is an antibacterial and antiviral/antimicrobial, the lemon is vit C and the whole process calms you and the child down. DD asks for the 'special drink' when she has a sore throat and it works.

For adults the whiskey is a sleep aid as well.

Too late if she can't swallow but for the future. I hope she feels better.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 07/05/2021 03:23

Can you do a juice freezer pop? Pour fruit juice in a paper cup and stand a spoon upright in it. Put it in freezer. When hardened, peel off paper cup and let her eat it as a popsicle. Orange juice or lemonade would be good for throat.

RainOnMe79 · 07/05/2021 07:19

Thank you everyone. Dr called back around 5.30 by that time she had just settled down and was starting to fall asleep. He said he could see her at 6.30am in out of hours or to contact GP in morning. As she was more settled I agreed to contact gp this morning, she is still asleep she must be so tired as she was up all night. Thanks for all suggestions

You did well and 111 is there for any health problems- better to be safe.

I hope your GP can fit you in today and assess LO

Lots of viral infections out there that cause sore throats, they will worry if she/ he is not drinking enough. For eg my son recently had scarlet fever - a rash that originally looked like his eczema flaring up- however earliest marked symptoms was his difficulty eating and then swallowing fluids. He got seen in hospital discharged with anti biotic and then re seen and given strong painkillers and I was told if he was struggling to swallow his saliva (you can heat on how they talk & spit dribbles from mouth if young) then it's admission.

threeteenstaximum · 07/05/2021 08:08

He had strong ibuprofen given which settled pain in throat a little, I gave him chilled melon and ice cream to eat and gradually after 3 days antibiotics started to work- savagely fever is viral so it was weird that anti biotics worked

Also scarlet fever starts to cover body - it is what it sounds like but the early stages are difficult to spot.

I'm not saying this is it, as lots of viruses can cause swelling and soreness of throat glands , it means LO is fighting off something

25yearsnhsworker · 07/05/2021 08:13

Keep an eye on her when my daughter couldn't swallow her saliva due to awful throat pain she had to be admitted for IV antibiotics.
Difflam throat rinse is very good to ease the pain.

guessmyusername · 07/05/2021 09:19

Sounds a bit like tonsillitis. It is like swallowing razorblades. There are usually white spots visible on tonsils. Antibiotics are usually needed. Can you tell it has happened to me 3 times.

Littleroundsponge · 07/05/2021 19:30

Hope your DD is doing okay, OP Flowers

RainOnMe79 · 08/05/2021 08:29

Thank you for all replies they really do help when it's the middle if the night with no one else to ask.

Called GP in the morning and they were so good, booked her in that morning and confirmed tonsillitis and started on antibiotics, started taking right away and already seems to be doing better.
