Bath mystery - ‘exxingham’ - anyone know where this might be?

Have been given a bundle of Victorian B&W/early 20th c postcards . One reads very much like a child has written it and trying to figure out a bit more about it...

Writing says

‘Dear sis just a PC to thank you for your PC which I was please to get from you . Dear sis you come and see me when you can . Mistress is going to let me go to Bath some day but you have to come and see me first it’s nice to think you are near but you must let me know , with kind love to you from sis xxx . I get lots of letters now when you come’

It’s quite a sad wee note really, I’m quite haunted by the thought of a wee lass writing to her ‘sis’ - I miss my own wee ‘sis’ right now so it’s rather struck a chord !

The postcard was sent to ‘Exxingham house’ in Oldfield Park, Bath which I wonder might be a clue to it’s origins but googling is proving useless ... and was sent from Bristol . Can’t get a year but think King George V stamp .

Thought MN is as good a place as any to ask !!

Could it have been Effingham House? That pops up on a few google searches. In 1894 the family living there were the Goldsmids, a Jewish family.

That sounds about right yes; so possibly two servants I suppose ... gosh that makes you think . I suppose that explains the needing permission to visit !! Thanks 💐

Have a play on Bath Historical Directories - you can search for addresses and filter by area and/or house name. As PP says, Effingham House looks like a good candidate? Had a number of occupants over the years recorded in the directory.

I think your letter looks like it was written by a servant maybe - with the reference to mistress? So if her sister was also in service she might not be recorded in the directory but you might get lucky with the 1901 or 1911 census?

I'm going to say it was Effingham rather than Exxington. These estate agents details for what is now 96 Lower Oldfield Park Road mention it used to be called 'Chalcroft' and one of its near neighbours was called 'Effingham'.

Ah, beaten to it!

I don't know about the place, but that does sound very sweet and quite sad. Very poignant.

Would love to see a photo of it?

the local history society might have some info or ideas on how to find out more?

Searching in the Bath Historical directories linked above , there are several records for a G D Hunt living at Effingham house, 41 Upper Oldfield Park from 1916 to 1921. Tel no 497

Photo of the card - it’s a lovely message . Lovely handwriting, too!

It’s addressed to a Miss R Quick - can see on ancestry a lot of Quicks in Somerset . Appears to have been sent from Bristol . It’s the thing about wanting her sister near her, very poignant .

Thanks for posting the pic.

It really is very poignant Sad

It does definitely look like Exxingham though, doesn't it? I wonder if it really is Effingham or if there is another explanation.

Bobbyelvis4ever · 07/05/2021 13:43

That’s hard to figure out. The “x/f” in the building name looks like neither the “x” that are kisses at the end of the message, nor like the “f” in the use of for or from.

What a lovely lovely thing to have though
