What do you cook in your air fryer?

And which one shall I buy?

I really want one for doing homemade chicken nuggets and chips that aren’t cooked in loads of oil but need to convince DP that it would be useful for other things as well!

They also seem to vary massively in price so any recommendations would be welcome.

And bake at home rolls or warming things like ciabatta rolls, we just do them in there.

DH also puts things in to heat that are in a dish if it fits

Apparently you can do cakes and other things (according to instruction book) but we've never tried that

I got tempted by the temptation aisle in Lidl recently. So far I've discovered scampi was perfect and homemade chips were disappointing. Would love it if you all posted timings/ tips. Instructions with my new toy are sparse.

If you have got an oven you don't need a separate unit to be an air fryer. Just get one or two of these mesh trays and you can air-fry in your oven. My DC claim the chips made this way are better that "real" chips.

I love mine. I have an actifry and recently purchased the Instant pot Vortex which I love as It is so versatile, love it that much that I have a Vortex mini on the way too now.
You can do just about anything really in them.
I even do my dippy eggs in a morning in it whilst I'm sorting my laptop out before work.

CombatBarbie · 08/05/2021 08:47

We have an actifry, chips take 45 mins but are so good! I've used mine for roast potatoes, chicken etc. You have just reminded me to dig out the recipe book that comes with it, you can apparently do cakes in them....

I use an Instant Pot Duo Crisp (similar to Ninja Foodi). It is essentially a very small electric oven with a powerful fan, (air fryer function) and operates at a variety of temperatures. Oven chips are about 20x better than done in the oven, but I use it to cook anything that I would grill, roast or bake - fish fingers, sausages, chicken, salmon fillets, tomatoes, mushrooms, roast potatoes, homemade onion Bhajis, crumbles, pies, cakes, steamed puddings, cookies. It isn't big enough to do large batches or portions but I use it as a main cooking source for a family of 2 adults, 2 teens. It earns its space on the work top by also having pressure cooker, sauté and slow cooker settings. I can brown meat and veg while I'm getting ready for work, add liquid then put it on slow cook for casserole to be ready when I get in. Pressure cooker Mac and cheese is ready in about 7 mins. It was expensive but absolutely worth it for me.

I have a Ninja foodie. It does loads, not just air frying. A gorgeous, tender beef stew in 40 mins is a highlight. They have 8 or so different functions.

Babdoc · 08/05/2021 09:12

An air fryer? Hmm. Not sure fried air is a very substantial meal, OP….Grin

Moiraroseswigs · 08/05/2021 09:16

It's also great for toasted sandwiches

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 08/05/2021 09:21

I do loads in mine (Ninja Foodi Health Grill)

Chicken thighs, bacon, jacket potatoes, steak, salmon fillets, cod, all sorts. I do egg fried rice in it sometimes.

IhaveMyMoments · 08/05/2021 09:21

We're looking at getting in but need a large capacity. For family of 5 /6 obviously I'd cool 2 seperate lots if need be but don't want tk be doing 3 or 4

FunnyWonder · 08/05/2021 09:35

I bought a cheap Tower air fryer from Argos to see if I liked the idea. It's really good. Homemade chips are delicious but I do find that no amount of shaking the basket cooks them evenly, so I remove the cooked ones and leave the paler ones in to cook for a few more minutes. Baby potatoes are beautiful, as are roast potatoes and baked potatoes. Also sweet potato fries. Bit of a potato theme here! I have cooked chicken nuggets and fish fingers in there, but only when the oven isn't already on for something else.

Fiercestcalm · 08/05/2021 09:44

Jacket potatoes ( microwave them first) air fryer makes them crispy
DHS sausages and bacon
Curried chicken skewers
Chips
Steak/ most meat

Get a large air fryer, there are two of us and I have to do chips separately. I use my wall ovens so much less now ( am not brave enough to bake in it) we have an air fryer, was given it and was highly sceptical, wouldn’t be without this egg shaped marvel.

LadyCatStark · 08/05/2021 09:45

We’ve got the Ninja Foodi and we use it for homemade chips and sweet potato fries, roast potatoes or small potato cubes, any kind of frozen convenience food (except pizza!), chicken wings, all sorts really.

Definitely going to try jacket potatoes now too 😊.

Bathshebahardy · 08/05/2021 09:54

I have a Ninja instant pot and air frying is definitely good. It's healthier than frying and tasty. It also has the pressure cook/slow cook etc. functions so really useful.
The instructions and recipes that come with it are poor, as are recipe books you can buy. The best place for recipes is the Facebook Ninja pages.
You do need a reasonable size kitchen as it is bulky.

UmamiMammy · 08/05/2021 10:36

@FizzyPink

Oh wow this is promising!

I saw that the Wilko one was rated the best budget one in a few online reviews so might start with that and then upgrade if we get lots of use out of it.

My mum bought the Wilko one after reading the reviews, I then bought one, as did my brother, aunt and a neighbour!!!
Weenurse · 08/05/2021 10:39

Roast chicken and veg.
The best roast pork and crackling. I was never able to get crackle right before.
Along with what every one else said.

nembrotha · 14/05/2021 09:21

Thanks everyone, these weren't on my radar at all, but I bought one of the small Wilkos ones and I love it!

I have a crap old oven with dodgy door seal which never got anything crispy.

I have done breaded chicken and breaded fish so far. Will read everyone elses food suggestions for future inspiration.
