I really need job advice

I've namechanged so I can be fully open about my history, I know some friends use MN so if you recognise me, hi guys, feel free to give me any job tips!

I'm feeling really stuck about job/career options.

In summary: age 37, 3 kids, have a degree & an MA in humanities subjects, good academic results. Temped in basic admin roles, but had DC1 at 24, and didn't go back to work until 5 years later, on a local government graduate scheme. Completed 1 year of the scheme, then moved to a more flexible local job teaching children 1st aid & basic life support, basically because the commute was unsustainable (big mistake in retrospect). Went overseas for 2 years, been back in the UK for 2 years now, on a temporary contract at my local museum doing front of house work when the museum is open, & research/writing/archiving when the museum is closed - I love it but it isn't going to carry on much longer, & there are no museum jobs around!

I live near a rural town so there aren't many jobs, & there aren't many training options either - my big city is Exeter, an hour away. We are fortunate in that we live on DH's salary, but all my kids are at school now & I want to work... I can't decide whether I should be seeking some sort of part time job like teaching assistant, or part time admin role in the NHS, or whether I should try to train up as something else for more of a career... but see above about training options.

I'm good at research, writing, policy, interested in governance, procedures, things being done accurately. I'm interested in social care, welfare, touchy feely liberal stuff. I really enjoy having colleagues & being outside of the home, having a team & shared goals.

I don't know - I just don't know what I should be doing with my life?!

Spend some time googling aptitude tests and career test stuff and take as many as you can. Also speak to career coaches. Get on linkedin and browse people’s profiles and setup informational calls with those whose jobs interest you.

Career, definitely. You’re in the fortunate position of being able to find something that interests you and you’ve potentially got quite a long time to establish yourself in a career. Good suggestions above for how to go about it. Good luck whatever you choose Smile

Just “just settle” for a job if that’s not what you want. That’s not to take away from teaching assistants or admin roles, but you seem like you want a career, and if you are fortunate enough to be able to afford to retrain then you absolutely should.

Can’t advise on careers unfortunately
