Dairy free single cream alternative

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/05/2021 07:54

Hello, I am looking for a dairy free single cream alternative that behaves like single cream in a recipe. My son and I are both sensitive to dairy however I am itching to try to recreate tapas style creamy garlic mushrooms. I've done the Philadelphia trick. It's just not the same!

Ive had no success with quark or Greek yogurt.
Any recommendations welcome!

I think you get soya and oat cream alternatives in the supermarket

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/05/2021 07:58

@dementedpixie thanks, have you ever tried them? Do you know if they heat the same as single cream?

Alpro do a plant based cream.

I’ve used oatly creme fraiche to make creamy sauces. It’s not the same, but it’s very nice.

Nothing will really taste the same as real cream but if it tastes good, you’re on to a win.

Maybe this is me being dim but isn’t Philadelphia dairy?!

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/05/2021 08:10

@PurpleDaisies not dim at all, it is!

The only way I can explain it is that the intolerance is a sliding scale. Philadelphia in small quantities wouldn't cause much bother. At the other end of the scale is melted cheese, ice cream and cream. I'm guessing it's to do with the fat content.

In all honesty I've never looked too much into it, I just avoid dairy where possible and make the "safest" choices for me and him where it's not possible.

That makes sense! I was confused by the yogurt and quark too.

You might want to ask on the vegan board. I’ve not had much cause to use a cream substitute but as I said, that oatly creme fraiche is nice. It melts to a cream consistency. Might be worth a go. Dairy sensitivity is a nuisance but at least now going vegan is trendy there are many more alternatives. Alpro non dairy custard is fantastic, although not suitable for garlic mushrooms!!!

Elmlea plant single
Alpro single cream
Oatly creamy oat single cream

Any of these would work.

pixietinkdust · 05/05/2021 08:54

Elmlea do a PLANT cream. Both a single and a double. They did stock it in Aldi for a little while but mainly it can be found in Tescos. From memory I believe the cartons are still red or blue and the PLANT label is green across the top.

It’s fantastic! My partner is dairy intolerant too and we use this in all creamy cooking, and even to pour over cakes etc. You really cannot tell the difference. Smile

I used dairy-free cream cheese alternative and elmlea single plant cream recently to make creamy mushrooms.
Apart from mushrooms I used garlic paste, half a stock cube, a splash of white wine and mushroom ketchup

roguetomato · 05/05/2021 09:00

Alpro single soya.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/05/2021 09:18

Thanks for the suggestions folks.
I went to our rather small Tesco and found creme Fraiche, the alpro cream and also some lacto free cream. No sign of the Elmlea.

I've decided to go reduce the recipe into tiny portions and have a go with all three. I want this recipe dinner party ready by the time lockdown is over!

Have you tried lactose-free milk/cream in case it's lactose-intolerance instead of dairy intolerance/allergy? You can buy lactose-free milk, cream, cheese & pastry (DSIL is lactose intolerant).

Y0YO · 05/05/2021 09:27

If you can find Elmlea, it's another vote from me. I used it for a birthday cake and it was brilliant. I don't normally enjoy substitutes apart from plant milk but this was good in its own right and behaved well in the recipe

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/05/2021 09:37

@Y0YO if I have no success with the ones I have bought I will venture to Sainsbury's in search of elmlea. I want it to taste as authentic as possible.

I'm sure it will be fab with all the thought you've out into it! I've not really tried many other brands so they we'll be just as good

Y0YO · 05/05/2021 09:40

*may well be, sorry

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/05/2021 09:43

@Y0YO thanks! It's my favourite dish at our favourite tapas place and I'm determined to replicate it!

Elmlea plant based

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/05/2021 13:09

The lactofree worked best and tasted AMAZING!
Thanks very much for the help folks.

Too soon to know if it will disagree though Blush

dementedpixie · 05/05/2021 13:15

I'd you are normally dairy free then lactofree may cause a reaction as only the milk sugar is removed not the cows milk protein
