Brene Brown

Anyone else a little bit obsessed with Brene? I love everything about her, what she teaches, how clever she is, how relatable, her accent. I've got her parenting manifesto on my wall and love all the choice theory stuff. I listen to her in the car every chance I get.

If you haven't already, search her out. You won't regret it!

I can't stand her, she is a total one trick pony, who's teachings are common sense in pretty clothes, but only apply to a pretty small proportion of people.

The fandom she incites in some people (and looks like you are one of them!) is utterly baffling.

She is a kindly aunt dishing out sensible common sense, but it isn't anything magic

She is probably single handedly responsible for people misusing 'vulnerable' all the time as well!

Ladywinesalot · 04/05/2021 13:34

I think she’s interesting especially when it comes to the vulnerable concept, but agree it’s very over used and not always that helpful.
Some of her podcasts can be done ver gushing as well and come across insincere.

GappyValley · 04/05/2021 13:37

What am I missing with the 'vulnerable' thing?

It means 'at risk' but she seems to want it to mean 'if I'm honest with you about my failings, it will make you feel less bad about your failings and then we can all be best friends'

Apart from her butchering of language, it is incredibly naive to think your boss/partner/friend is going to find it endearing to hear all about your fuckups, rather than just seeing you as someone who fucks up

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 04/05/2021 13:41

Literally what Gappy said….,

Lottapianos · 04/05/2021 13:45

She's a great speaker, and I like some of what she has to say. I agree about the gushing and fawning on her podcast - I found it all a bit much, although I think Americans have a much higher tolerance level for all that! I unsubscribed after I heard the episode with Laverne Cox, it was truly unbearable and Brene really outdid herself with the fawning and ass kissing

TabbyStar · 04/05/2021 13:46

I subscribed to her podcasts but found her too fawning so I unsubscribed! I feel as though I ought to like her work but I just don't. The whole vulnerability thing doesn't really feel very substantial to me, a bit performative, but I could just be being unfair.

WinoLino · 04/05/2021 13:56

Vulnerability stuff isn't my favourite, although I think it's interesting. I like what she says about boundaries but I think that's because it seems I have had none for many years. For me I think she seems to be saying things that nobody else is. I do agree about the gushyness and that is irritating. Did anyone else listen to the episode she did with Russell Brand? It's old now but I really enjoyed that, found it thought provoking and has made me look at spirituality differently

But what she says about boundaries is just plain common sense Confused
You would probably get just as good advice from a few of the wiser and straighter talking posters on here

She isn't remarkably clever, or insightful on this...

I had far too much brene brown shoved down by throat by an HR woman at my old company, who, like you, seemed to think she was the cleverest, most thought provoking and enlightened person on the planet...

But HR woman was a total lost soul who used to inhale self help books like other people read news articles.
I think a large part of the BB fanbase is that typical 'lost' 30/40 something woman who hasn't had things turn out exactly how they expected, and are scrambling around for some insight to the secret sauce of life, and find it more palatable to come from her and her drole-y voice, than from your straight talking friend who comes across as mean

WinoLino · 04/05/2021 16:40

It's not common sense to me, I really like her. It's also not common sense to most of my friends who still find it hard to say no and to put boundaries in place. Not sure I would find that on here really, the boards are full of people that have become unstuck when it comes to this stuff.

But sorry you had it forced upon you-feel free to ignore me Smile

pretty much captures the target market for self help

You have a gift for writing @GappyValley though Grin

WinoLino · 05/05/2021 11:00

Yes I'm probably that target audience to be honest. Had something awful happen and then got diagnosed with PTSD. Now coming out the other side and not too proud to admit I read my fair share of self help books! Grin

Oh gawd no, she gets on my tits! My old housemate used to be obsessed with her and she was a bloody nightmare...this describes her well
