'Lost' tampon saga/stress! Apologies for TMI...

Morning,

Nine days ago, I went to change my tampon and it didn't seem to be there. I was pretty sure I'd put one in at work a few hours earlier, but I couldn't feel it at all. There was no string and I couldn't find anything up there when I rummaged. I assumed I couldn't have put one in earlier and so put a fresh one in at that point. For some reason, this played on my mind afterwards, so I went and took the new tampon out and had another rummage, still couldn't feel anything. Decided to try and put it out of my mind.

The next morning, with my period still in full flow, I decided to call my GP to ask them to check and I saw a lovely nurse who put a speculum in and had a look. She told me she couldn't perform an internal exam, but she could "see what you can't see" using the spotlight. She had a good look, moving the speculum around and prodding about, but said there was nothing there. She said that the tampon would have to be compressed somewhere for it not to be visible and she thought this was unlikely so she told me to go home and have another rummage when my period finishes.

So, my period finished about four days ago, but I'm still stressing about the possibility of something lost up there! I've had another feel and still nothing. The thing which is making me anxious is that my vulva is a bit sore and I can't work out if this is just hormonal/ completely unrelated (I'm 46 and my cycle is currently a bit haywire).

After nine days, I'm thinking that if anything is stuck up there, it will start to become apparent, right? There is no odour, no unusual discharge, no pelvic pain, just this stingy vulva (which I feel I have had before, but I'm now just attributing everything to a possible missing tampon!).

Those of you who have had this problem, would you mind sharing your symptoms, if any?
TIA

I haven’t had it myself, but I’m a GP and have removed plenty of ‘lost’ tampons for women. In my experience I’ve never had to go hunting for it, it’s always been immediately obvious when I put the speculum in and had a look. If the nurse got a good view and couldn’t see anything, I think you’re home and dry.

@AppropriateAdult thanks so much for replying, great to have a professional opinion too!

Yes, I'm sure you're right. I think it pretty unlikely that it would have lodged itself out of sight in the short space of time it was in there (less than 24 hours). I don't know why I'm so bothered by it, especially as I've had it checked out already. I

I’ve lost / forgotten one once..... I knew because I smelt funny after a short period of time - by now you should definitely know if it was still inside you.

Also, in the kindest possible way... Vulva might be a bit sore because of all the rummaging.

ArtfulScreamer · 04/05/2021 11:21

I've done this and so has a former housemate the thing that alerted us was the smell believe after 9 days you'd know about it.

4PawsGood · 04/05/2021 11:23

I’ve done this and could smell it by about day three or four. It was still during my period.

Thecatsawinner · 04/05/2021 11:30

You would have grey discharge and/or a smell by now

Thanks for your responses. You’ve helped to reassure me. @CrumbsThatsQuick yes, I did wonder if the soreness is down to over prodding 😳
