Eyelid eczema - which makeup product is causing this?

Lately, whenever I put on eye makeup, I wake up the next day with eyelid eczema (at least I think that's what it is) and the eyelids are a bit swollen/ puffy for a good few days, until I use a mild steroid for a couple of days to clear it up. Hard to describe properly but basically it affects the fold on the eyelid. The first time it happened the eyelids were red, itchy and flaky, now i don't have those symptoms, just weird eyelid unevenness.

I have been using for a long while:
Chanel precision eye definer
Maybelline waterproof mascara
Then granier miscellar to remove makeup

I used to have no problems with this set of makeup, it only started in the last couple of months. My face doesn't get any reaction from the miscellar so I don't think that's the one causing problems. The mascara I changed to a new tube last week but I still had this eye problem. I've probably had the eyeliner for 1.5 years now, could that be the problem, or did I suddenly become allergic to the mascara? Which of these do you think is the culprit?

I will try eliminating them one by one but is any of the above known to cause allergic reactions? Just strange that it never used to be an issue at all!

I'm allergic to the mascara but I know which ingredient I'm allergic to. Also it is very possible to become allergic to a product(s) youve never had an issue with before - it happened to me and my reaction was pretty awful.

I don’t know the answer but am watching with interest as this EXACT thing is happening to me all of a sudden despite not changing any of my makeup and the formulas (apparently) being the same!

Do any of the products contain MI? (methylisothiazolinone)

I steer clear of anything with that in as it causes anything from heat and mild swelling to a full blown reaction where it looks like I've been punched in the face and then developed eczema on top.

Some info here: actionagainstallergy.org/methylisothiazolinone-allergy/

It could be the micellar water. The skin on your eyelid is much thinner and can be more easily irritated than the skin on your face. So it could be the micellar water being too strong for your eyelid, but fine on your face.

I would give eye make-up a break until the skin has healed, and then re-introduce each product one at a time for a few days before you start using another product to see if it is one particular thing.

Be very careful using a steriod cream though if it has not been prescribed as they aren't supposed to be used round the eyes.

Also should have said - it can come on suddenly, even after using a product for years. For me it was a reaction to a facial sun block that I'd used before with no problems.

The problem then was that once I'd "triggered" the allergy I had a hard couple of years reacting to different products - paint, cleansers, soaps, foundation, shampoos... all I could do was read the ingredients lists of everything very carefully and reject any products containing MI.

thanks everyone for the reply!

so last time my eyelids only needed a tiny amount of the mildest steroid applied once to sort themselves out.

I then left it for a couple of days. Then yesterday I used the Chanel eyeliner on them, no mascara, then removed eyeliner with a Clinique eye makeup remover after a few hours. And the eyelids were fine this morning! Phew. So now it's either the mascara or the miscellar. I'm inclined to think it's the mascara, despite me having used the same product the past few years, and having just used a new tube last time, too! Wonder if they changed the formula, or if I may have just suddenly become allergic to something that I was previously ok with. Going to look into gentle mascaras now! May try miscellar on eyes again at some point just to confirm that it's still ok to use.
