Sorry I didn't mean to come across as a bit short then; it seemed obvious that the OP was talking about the embarrassing email addresses used by lots of people on MSN Chat etc rather than work/university emails, and the thread just seemed to be people scoffing and saying they didn't have the internet in the 70s.

Pheebs2021 · 04/05/2021 10:10

ASL I was about 14 F somewhere in the North West... always 18 F London though.

LindaEllen · 04/05/2021 10:24

God, mine was like ..

cuteangelcheekychick

But the problem was I was incredibly overweight with awful acne, so it just didn't suit me whatsoever, and I got the shit ripped out of me for it for years.

I mean, the sensible thing to do would be to make a new one. But I literally had it for about a decade, and only made a new one when my college personal tutor said we should apply for unis with a professional sounding email address!!

AdaColeman · 04/05/2021 10:25

The internet hadn't been invented when I was in my teens, but I was taken to see one of the early computers used by the Civil Service.

It was the first computer I'd seen, and was a long corridor with about five or six rooms off, all packed full with large metal cabinets.

There was the occasional glowing light, and lots of clunking and whirring.

It was incredibly exciting!

Not scoffing.Hmm Just embarrassingly old, clearly. I don't even know what MSN is/was.
ladygindiva · 04/05/2021 10:29

I was 32 when I first used the Internet!

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 04/05/2021 10:48

Mine was a total fangirl reference to a series of books I loved.

nothing much has changed then Grin

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 04/05/2021 10:58

I remember learning about emails addresses in computer science. We had two awesome female teachers and one man who'd moved into teaching from working in IT and was really keen to encourage the girls in the class to consider it as a career.

It does make me thankful I never got a tattoo as a teenager though.

omgthepain · 04/05/2021 11:12

My friend had bigboobedbecky@

Whatever it was

Funny at the time
Cringe now

UmamiMammy · 04/05/2021 11:25

The thread title made me laugh............a lot of us experienced life before the internet. My first experience of email and owning a PC was in 1997 and I had an @aol address. I can still hear the sound in my head of the dial-up modem

AdaColeman · 04/05/2021 12:22

I used to love that modem dial up sound, it was saying "Hello world, I'm here, ready to join in"!

Loving all these names!

JaninaDuszejko · 04/05/2021 12:39

I didn't have an email address until I started my PhD in 1994. I had a friend who had done her first degree at MIT and she was shocked none of the rest of us had had emails as undergraduates. Precursors to email started in the 1960s and the queen sent her first email in 1976 so it's quite old technology really. My kids very rarely use email these days.

minniemomo · 04/05/2021 12:44

Hadn't been invested!

sunshineandshowers21 · 04/05/2021 12:45

angel4u247 🙈 it still makes me cringe now. i still use it though when i buy stuff online so that all the spam then goes there instead of my new grown up email address.

Not scoffing. Just pointing out that some of us are nearer retirement age than teenage! Smile
Spidey66 · 04/05/2021 13:49

I was 13 in 1979 and had my 20th birthday in 1986.

OohKittens · 04/05/2021 13:51

Yes sorry I did mean msn/chat names, I have just watched the episode of pen15 where they join a chat room. I'm 36 and had a job in a cyber cafe (met my husband in an msn chat room swansea teen locals Blush) I will see if mumsnet can change it. My friends was up4it88, I also went by the nickname natsda Confused
