How are you supposed to get rid of old lightbulbs?

I know you're not supposed to throw them in the bin, but round here they don't accept them for recycling either. Sick of putting them aside for a future, more intelligent me to know how to deal with them. I'm not getting any more intelligent so please advise me!

Have you checked your council website? Ours specifically says to put them in the bin

I bin them

catpoooffender · 03/05/2021 19:33

Thanks. I have looked on the council website and it says they can't collect light bulbs with the recycling. I guess maybe I should just put them in the bin. It's just that the packaging usually says not to.

Can you take them to the tip where you live?

MrsWooster · 03/05/2021 19:37

We put them in the glass recycling. Is that wrong..?

Vinorosso74 · 03/05/2021 19:39

We save them until we do a dump trip as there's a specific bin for them.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 03/05/2021 19:40

I put mine in the recycling....I had no idea they were not supposed to go in!
I assumed they'd fit in with the glass, as Mrs Wooster says.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 03/05/2021 19:41

We just chuck them in the bin.

pickingdaisies · 03/05/2021 19:42

Light bulbs don't go in with glass recycling, @MrsWooster.

Willowkins · 03/05/2021 19:42

Our household recycling and waste site has a special bin for them.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 03/05/2021 19:42

i just had a google and it's only the old style incandescent ones that are supposed to be binned, others can be recycled.

They don’t collect them with the recycling but if you go to your local council recycling site they recycle them but you put the old ones in the bin.
catpoooffender · 03/05/2021 20:05

The rules are different depending on where you live.

Place in outside the store you brought it from next time you go shopping.

I return as much as I can back to the shops.

who told you you're not supposed to throw them in the bin?

About 20 years ago, there were early fluorescent lamps with a tiny amount of mercury that needed special treatment, but I think they've been superceded years ago.

catpoooffender · 03/05/2021 22:43

@PigletJohn the packaging usually has this symbol on it

I noticed that you can recycle lightbulbs at my local B&Q

SoupDragon · 03/05/2021 22:56

My local IKEA recycles lightbulbs.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 03/05/2021 23:28

Our Tesco has a bank for recycling various things by the tills. It includes light bulbs, batteries and printer cartridges.

Topseyt · 04/05/2021 01:25

Of course they can go in the bin. We are told to put them in the general household bin here, not the recycling.

So, you fly tip.
picturesandpickles · 04/05/2021 06:28

Take it to your recycling centre. We usually have some tetrapaks, pens, light bulbs and batteries and take them all.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/05/2021 06:33

Our sainsburys has a bin in the car park.

I’d email the council refuse and recycling dept and ask them what to do.
