What's your favourite cookery book? One you swear by.

Just that.

I've got quite a few cook books, but want something new. There's too much choice so I could do with some suggestions.

One of my long-time favourites is Home Cook by Alastair Hendy. Also Roast Chicken And Other Stories by Simon Hopkinson. My friend gave me Indian by Shehzad Husain and Rafi Fernandex which is brilliant.

I enjoy cooking and make everything from scratch but I'm no 'chef'.

(eg I have never been able to master Thai curries - they're always too thin and watery, not rich and creamy..and end up with the wrong balance of spices.)

Any ideas?

Nigella - feast. It’s really battered and dog eared now so I should consider buying a replacement , absolutely love it though.

ConnieCaterpillar70 · 03/05/2021 20:19

I swear by Leith's cookery bible.

It's got just about every classic recipe in, and I use it loads for sauce recipes as well as baking. It's a really good all rounder.

My Good Housekeeping cookbook. Think my ex-MIL gave it to us when we moved in together and I kept it when we split. Great for the basics/classics

I love Mary Berry Family Sunday Lunch - easy to follow recipes and not all roast based by any means.

I second the roasting tin series - my favourite is The Quick Roasting Tin

londongram · 03/05/2021 20:29

I have close to 100 cookbooks - I can't choose one it's too hard - I'm fickle, I crave variety, so one cookbook is impossible. At the minute I'm loving Jamie's 7 ways - just so easy and popular with the kids - don't recommend the Jerk chicken but apart from that - a successful, lazy cookbook.

I got this for my 16th birthday from my Mum who got it for hers.

Delia's Complete Cookery Course. My copy is 30 years old and still the best reference book for the basics and for foolproof recipes.

Just bought Diana Henry's From Oven to Table and it's turning into the best book I've bought for ages. It's like a supercharged version of The Roasting Tin.

KatharinaRosalie · 03/05/2021 21:16

All the Roasting Tin series. Green Roasting Tin has had most use, but the original and Around The World are great too.

DramaAlpaca · 03/05/2021 21:29

@salty78 yes, my well-loved Delia is of a similar vintage. I might have to get the Diana Henry book too.

londongram · 03/05/2021 23:24

Diana Genry is a legend!

londongram · 03/05/2021 23:25

Diana Henry - damn the auto correct

HeddaGarbled · 03/05/2021 23:32

Ones I am using a lot currently are the newest Jamie, the first 2 Hairy Dieters and the first Joe Wicks.

I also tear recipes out of newspapers and magazines and keep them in a folder. I use this more than any book.

Just got a bit carried away and ordered three Diana Henry books Grin

Shopaholic100 · 04/05/2021 01:56

The Bero book is great for classic baking recipes. I swiped my mums when I left home.

Pyewackect · 04/05/2021 01:58

@ShanghaiDiva

Delia, of course.
Me too.
londontonyc · 04/05/2021 02:25

Ooh, so many! It depends what I'm cooking - I love either Rick Steins Far Eastern Odyssey or Madhur Jaffreys Taste of the Far East for curries. Leith's baking bible or Nigellas Domestic Goddess for cakes. Delia or Good Housekeeping for comfort food. I find Felicity Cloakes 'The Perfect...' articles and books entertaining and reliable - love her writing. She has my dream job Smile

londontonyc · 04/05/2021 02:31

My favourite Thai Green is a Madhur Jaffrey from Taste of the Far East. Made with beef skirt steak. The only one I've tried that isn't watery. Although I've written in the book - simmer for 2.5 hours not 10 minutes!

hairymuffet · 04/05/2021 03:39

Delia always !!

TabooNCoke · 04/05/2021 05:05

A little book called How to boil an egg. It was written by a mum for her son who went off to Uni, I use it regularly.

Bearsbearsbears40 · 04/05/2021 05:48

I have a Good Housekeeping book from the 90s as per pps. Also, I use Nigella Feast a lot, especially for the chocolate cake recipes.
