Salary after SAHM

I've been a sahm for 11 years, with a couple of short fixed term contracts in between. My last contract was hours only, I was paid £60 per hour (no holidays, no sickness etc) office based report writing. It used the more general aspects of my practical degree which I finished 12 years ago. The company can not give me another contract unfortunately.

I've applied for a job and have an interview coming up. It's practical based plus some secretarial duties (I have no experience of). Most importantly for me it's part time. Starting salary is (I'm guessing from searching on their website, it's not stated explicitly) £15.5k, roughly £155 per day.

I'm totally over qualified for it....on paper. But I swear my brain has turned to mush since I have had DC and I'm well aware the equipment etc will be totally different to what was available 12 years ago. I'm pretty sure I would be able to do the job competently if I were to get it and I'm 100% certain I will never find job which is directly related to my qualifications. My qualifications are also not the right ones to get a permanent job doing what my temporary contract was for as it's the wrong field.

Is this going to be held against me? I've been turned down before because I'm "over-qualified" on paper. I've the qualifications but I really think I need to start at the bottom again. But obviously, I can't say that.

I don't know how to present myself. And I don't know what to say if they start questioning salary expectations and if they ask for my previous salary (can they do that?).

I was a sahm for about 10 years. Applied for a job that I was technically over qualified for, pay was about 19k. Within 3 years I was on double that at the same company in a managerial position. So it worked out for me.

I don’t mean to sound like a cow but if you’ve been out of the workplace for 11 years, and have an unrelated degree, over a decade old you probably wouldn’t seem to get overqualified for even entry level positions

I think that’s very good given you have been out of the job market for more than a decade! I’m a FT working professional with 2 dc with PhD who has never been a SAHP and I make only slightly more as a daily rate. I think you’re very lucky to pop back into the job market at that rate and I’d see it as a good opportunity to start building your career.

£60 AN HOUR? Jesus that's was a lot!

Just go for it. Won't know until you try

My degree isn't unrelated to the job I'm applying for.

It's unrelated to what I would need to work permanently at the place which gave me the temporary contract a couple of years ago.

Are they allowed to ask my previous salary in an interview?

Fingers crossed...
