How to get my son to ride a bike

I got my son a bike with the training wheals on, he’s 4 years old. I’m unable to ride a bike due to being hit by a car and left with permanent injuries. His dad is a useless pig who luckily he does t see. So he has t really been up close and able to watch someone. I’ve told him what to do and how I try to show and help but I struggle to bend down I’m on crutches . It’s not something I really thought I would struggle to help, it seams so silly but he wants to do it and I’m gutted I can’t seam to work out how to help. Of all the things I thought I would struggle with and this came from nowhere 🤦‍♀️ Has anyone been in this situation ?

Take the pedals off, lower the seat and let him use it as a balance bike. Once he's whizzing around like that (could be hours, could be weeks) put the pedals back on and start him off on a slight downward slope.

My mum can't actually ride a bike but taught us all how to.
She used to let us go around the house on it Grin.

Has he ridden a balance bike? If not, I’d do as MusicMenu suggests.

One of mine taught herself at 4 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ another refused to be taught and was 7 in the end!

Removing pedals for now is probably the best idea.

2using a balance bike would be est.
And then in the summer when he is used to the balance bike. I'm sure if you look into it there will be free bike riding courses for kids. My daughter learnt on one. She could already balance but was scared of pedals and wanted to use training wheels, I wouldn't let her because I saw it as a step back. Anyway she was riding like an expert after an hour of the course they were really good.
I'm sure if you look into there will be courses running close to where you are.

Search for ‘balance and ride’ courses near you. At that age I think a couple of hours in a group lesson and he would be riding. They aren’t expensive and depending on where you live some councils offer them free or subsidised, but even if you pay yourself it would be about £15 for a lesson in a group, so under £50 and he would make good progress.

The easiest way is to learn how to pedal on a tricycle, learn how to balance on a balance bike then once he can do both of those well go straight to a bike with no stabilisers. Stabilisers can actually make it harder.

WhatAmIWorth · 03/05/2021 16:22

Oh, that must be difficult for you. Could you look for a course as others have suggested? Or see if there are any teenagers around who would help you teach him for a small payment? Or ask one of his friend's parents? I would certainly have met up in the park with a DC's friend to help him learn.

I will definitely look Telford those courses I think that might work I never heard of them before so will have a look for that. He did have a tricycle and still does but he can’t reach the pedals I’ve pushed the seat as far as it goes but he just can’t reach. He is on the smaller side to be fair. I think that course would work though as he would be with other children not just me so it might take the pressure of a bit. Thank w
