As the weathers getting warmer I’m noticing these things everywhere in my kitchen. Pls tell me what the hell they are and if there’s anything I can do to get rid of them permanently😭

It looks like a mealworm beetle, and if its in your kitchen its bad news. Invest in tupperware and have a good spring clean. Watch out for larvae in your flour and grains.

Oh no Shock thank you for the reply

I know there are some glue traps that attract them but I cant find them to post a link; you could make your own with some card, strong double sided carpet tape, and some cornmeal as bait.

Hedgesfullofbirds · 03/05/2021 15:42

How big are they OP - they don't look quite like mealworm beetles to me, more like Cockchafers (Aka Maybugs), and, if so, are perfectly harmless - this is the time of year when they hatch ( the larvae live in turf and soil). They fly mainly at night, but are attracted by light and often find their way into houses at night if windows are open and lights left on. About an inch to two inches long, furry and quite appealing, in their own way!

gamerchick · 03/05/2021 15:51

Aw they've got lost.

Clean out your cupboards anyway. Always a good time when you spot beasties.

LaBellina · 03/05/2021 15:53

Looks like maybugs to me.
But it’s never a bad idea to invest in some spring cleaning and some good Tupperware to make sure all your goods are closed off for any type of bug.

RosesAndHellebores · 03/05/2021 15:55

Biscuit beetle?

username34512875 · 03/05/2021 15:59

Thank you so much everyone for the responses!! They are quite small, like the size of an ant! I do deep clean quite often tbh, I’m no mrs hinch though. But I will do a deep clean of all cupboards just to make sure.

Flour weevils. You need to chuck out all the dried food (flour, pasta etc), clean your cupboards very thoroughly and start again with everything in airtight glass or plastic containers.

Hedgesfullofbirds · 03/05/2021 16:04

If they are that small, OP, then I retract my identification - far too small to be Cockchafers.

Could well be Biscuit Beetles or a species of weevil.

TillyTopper · 03/05/2021 16:06

It's hard to see from your pic, but do make sure they aren't flour weevils - pic here. You have to through out all flour etc from experience and clean really thoroughly -I now keep everything in tupperware. They were here when we moved in and we didn't realise what they were but infested our stuff too.

Hmm... thanks everyone. They do look quite similar to the flour beetles! I’m incredibly squeamish and even having to google image them is making me itch! thanks everyone

Cockchafers, also known as Speedos Smile
Hedgesfullofbirds · 03/05/2021 17:47

@Veganveal Grin- yes, it is rather an unfortunate name for them and probably why most people avoid the embarrassment and refer to them as Maybugs or Doodlebugs!

Crazycatstory · 03/05/2021 18:01

Sorry, can’t see the picture really clearly. Are they dead or alive? If they are all dead, and your house has a wood frame they might be death watch beetle (sorry). I say this as someone with a very old cottage slowly being eaten by the little feckers Sad Its this time of year they start shagging, laying eggs and then dying, which is when you find them.
