Where to find gluten free red lentils?

Planning a curry night with friends for when that sort of thing is allowed again. I want to make a dhal but so far all the lentils I've looked at have a "may contain gluten" statement on them.

Does anyone know where i can find red lentils that are certified GF or without the may contain statement

I have had them. But I can’t remember where from. However it might be somewhere that has changed it’s warnings.
They are one of those products that are a nightmare to find, like ground rice.

Is the person you are cooking for coeliac. The only option is to lay them out and pick through them (it helps they are red) and then rinse several times. I’d go for a may contain. I’m very very careful with GF but it’s one of those items impossible to find (ironic as you get GF pasta made from it).

My son is coeliac and I would simply rinse them through carefully several times before using them. And I am very carful about cross-contamination in general.

YellowScallion · 03/05/2021 15:27

Thanks, I'm coeliac and if it was just for me I'd probably just inspect and rinse. I'm cooking for another coeliac too though so less comfortable with that approach for other people.

However it might be somewhere that has changed it’s warnings.

Yes, often i find with these sorts of things that there's lots of recommendations online but not always up to date. I have a few weeks to carry on searching. I've ruled out Tesco and Aldi so far

I've just searched on the Coeliac U.K. app and it doesn't list any at all.

Lentils are in and of themselves glutton free.

YellowScallion · 03/05/2021 15:36

Thanks @ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn - I'll have to speak to friend about if she'd be happy with a rinse and inspect approach or rethink the menu.

@midsomermurderess

Lentils are in and of themselves glutton free.
if they are processed in a factory where the are items that contain gluten then they can't say they are gluten free. It's the same with oats. They are gluten free but unless you get ones which specifically say they are gluten free then they may contain a trace.
handmademitlove · 03/05/2021 15:44

Waitrose seem not to have any warnings on them? www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/waitrose-love-life-red-split-lentils/096498-49360-49361

SweetPetrichor · 03/05/2021 15:48

I’ve never found any which are certified gluten free unfortunately. I just rinse them very well, but I can see how you may be loathe to do that with another coeliac guest. It’s one thing to gluten yourself, but so much worse to gluten someone else!

SleepyMathematician · 03/05/2021 15:49

I’m coeliac and I’ve never been ill with the rinse and inspect method, though I’m very careful with the inspecting. I’d agree to see if your friend is happy with this. She’s going to be only too aware of the issue I expect! It drives me mad. So many things like this have gluten warnings on.

UniversalAunt · 03/05/2021 15:53

Same issue with spices as gluten may be used in the processing chain.

Ask Crazy Jacks, I got a very prompt reply from them a couple of years ago.

YellowScallion · 03/05/2021 15:55

I've found waitrose don't always have the warnings on the website and they always have the disclaimer you should always check product labels and not rely solely on the information presented here.

I'll see if someone can find a packet and read it for me (we're a long way from a waitrose but can get online deliveries)

My husband is coeliac and we always just rinse them really well, never had a problem x

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 03/05/2021 16:03

I've just checked and I have a pack of Waitrose red lentils and there is no allergy warning on the pack.

I've only been GF for a month and hadn't even thought to check lentils!

YellowScallion · 03/05/2021 16:10

Ah thanks, i'll probably arrange an online order as there are a few other things I'd like from Waitrose since our local one closed down.

I've only been GF for a month and hadn't even thought to check lentils!

The warnings and/or gluten crop up in the most unlikely places. I bought some bacon once and it was only when i got it home that I found it had some sort of coating on it.

This is also why i'm quite nervous about allowing other people to cook for me, as most people have no idea that they have to check pretty much everything - I can't blame them, neither did I until I had to do it.

I joined Coeliacs UK and got their app. Makes shopping easier.
Things I had been eating that had no indication in the ingredients come up as not suitable sometimes.
