Do you know what mice smell like?

In the shed earlier I said to DP “it smells like mice in here, I’ll put some traps out”. He finds this incredibly funny, claims it’s not a thing and that the smell is probably either damp or the cat has got in and pissed somewhere.

You can smell mice, can’t you? I’ve only smelled them once before in the garage, put traps out and got a couple of mice, problem solved. They might be rats or something but it’s definitely a different smell to damp, cat piss or just general mustiness, isn’t it?

DP is claiming I must be a reincarnated Victorian house keeper or similar as ‘normal’ people wouldn’t know what mice smell like. I think it’s just one of those ingrained smells. Please help settle an argument.

Oh definitely. It’s very distinctive.

Scarby9 · 03/05/2021 10:43

Yes. Very distinctive.
Similar, but subtly different to a hamstery smell.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 03/05/2021 10:43

It's more the mice urine you can smell but it is very distinctive.

insancerre · 03/05/2021 10:44

Yes, very distinctive

AbsolutelyPatsy · 03/05/2021 10:45

pretty sure you can smell them, sort of musty

TheSpottedZebra · 03/05/2021 10:45

Yes you can! Sweet and fusty.

YetAnotherHastyNameChange · 03/05/2021 10:49

Definitely.

Elouera · 03/05/2021 10:53

Yes, you can smell them. They don't have a sphincter, so dribble urine constntly as they scurry along!!!

As a side, women generally have a better sense of smell than men!

Nerdybirdy · 03/05/2021 10:53

I always think it smells like cannabis. Can always tell when the cat has brought a live one in that’s running around somewhere because of the smell. Sad

EssentialHummus · 03/05/2021 10:55

Yup. I had them as pets as a kid and they smell faintly of mouse urine.

bishbashbosh99 · 03/05/2021 10:56

I defo know what a dead mouse smells like. It's rank

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 03/05/2021 10:57

Definitely, hard to describe but I'd know it if I smelled it!

SusannaMorvern · 03/05/2021 10:59

Yes, we struggle badly with mice.
It's sort of a cross between popcorn, wee and sleepy dog Grin. I hadn't actually realised so many people knew the smell, I've struggled to get rid of it from parts of our house, now worried visitors will noticeShock

Not only do mice have a smell, if you are familiar with U.K. hedgerow plants, you will know that hemlock is easily identified by its smell. Even the books describe it as ‘smelling of mice‘

Yes, really smelly.
My OH sometimes brings his tool bag in out of the shed.
Thinks if he hides it I won’t see it, you can smell it a mile off. Eugh

Let's hope he's not growing hemlock in his shed with the intention of finishing off the OP. Wink
