Why did none of my avocado seeds sprout?

Moths ago I did the toothpick thing with 11 of them and not a single one of them sprouted. I did make sure the water was always clean and topped up. I want to try again but what can I do to ensure at least one of them is successful? What else can I plant at home that will grow into a plant? Lentils?

@BananasAreEvil

Oh no. Patience is not one of my virtues unfortunately. What else can I plant at home for quick gratification?
Cress

I put my avacado seeds straight into soil. Now have 20+ of the bloody things.

I found this quite interesting, not tried any of them yet

Thanks!

Potatoes are v easy too. I have deep grow bags with them in. Just need lots and lots of watering. I left some in there from last year and they have produced more plants again.

Cucumbers are fun. Put them in the bathroom or on a window ledge in a deep pot. They are fast growers and do not need much heat - remember 'cool as a cucumber' which refers to growing temperature and not keeping the fruit in the fridge.

Patience is your friend. My avocado took ten weeks to split and start sprouting. We were just about to give up and throw it out. It's now a lovely little baby tree about two foot tall with loads of leaves.
