Unusual phobias?

Anyone have any?

DD (17) has a big phobia of .......stickers!
I often hear a 'shriek' and know it is'nt a Spider for example, but a sticker ( usually stuck in random places by her young siblings or she asks for them to be removed from clothing/packaging ect )

Mine is koumpounophobia.

Sounds weird but less uncommon than you might think.

tywysoges · 01/05/2021 23:42

A friend of mine is scared of peas…

I have a paralyzing fear of two plumbed loos next to each other with no cubical divider.

Weirdly I've worked in two offices where the loos have been like this (why, I've no idea - it's such a weird set up!). In one job I had to go across the street to use the loo because I couldn't even enter the stall to use one of the two loos (with the second one just sitting there!) shiver

The other office had the normal one-loo-only set up on another floor so I got lots of good stair climbing in that job!

No idea why but this weird loo set up terrifies me and always has done 😆

Polystyrene cups.

Flambola · 02/05/2021 01:06

Being forcibly injected with heroin.

Gingernaut · 02/05/2021 01:12

Enochlophobia - not a fear of crowded places, a fear of crowds.

No problem leaving the house, but a big problem with crowds.

Have never been to a big festival or a rock concert.

Happycat1212 · 02/05/2021 01:13

Balloons

Brieminewine · 02/05/2021 01:25

Empty swimming pools, as in with no water in not no people in.

SakuraEdenSwan1 · 02/05/2021 01:37

Mines not unusual but causes problems in my job, Vomit, can't stand seeing it, hearing it or smelling it which is problematic when working in A&EConfused

GandTisgoodforme · 02/05/2021 01:39

Baked beans... Can't bear to look at them.

princepearl · 02/05/2021 01:47

How do you know when you have gone from hating something to an actual phobia? I think I have a stupid phobia, but not sure where it's come, can anyone explain theirs?

FrankensteinIsTheMonster · 02/05/2021 01:58

Daddy-long-legses/craneflies should be an unusual phobia cause they're completely bloody harmless, but AAARGH. Though at least I can now cope with the idea of touching something that's been touched by a DLL.

dalmatianmad · 02/05/2021 02:12

Phlegm, as an A+E sister its been really difficult especially during covid.

It makes me want to cry, I'm genuinely fearful of it 😢

clipclop5 · 02/05/2021 02:15

Newspapers! Anything printed sets me off to be honest. New books are my idea of hell and even magazines aren’t my best friend. Mostly because of the smell but also hate getting ink on my hands. Has been this way since I was a toddler so don’t think there’s any chance of it going away!

MaryTeenOfScots · 02/05/2021 03:48

@Frankenstein I also had an intense fear of crane flies. It's not so bad now but I still hate them being anywhere near me.

I have submechanophobia (a fear of manmade things being underwater like sunken ships etc). But my weirdest one is that I hate being over the sea on Google Maps/Google Earth. I don't mind flying over the actual sea in a plane, where there is at least a tiny chance of ending up in it. But navigating over the sea on Google Maps from the safety of my home? Hate it.

Billandben444 · 02/05/2021 07:29

My grandson also has koumpounophobia (buttons) and is particularly stressed by his school uniform. We've devised different strategies to getting stuff on and off (once they're on and he can't see them he seems to be OK) but can sniff out a buttoned duvet cover a mile away. We reassure him with tales of Steve Jobs.

TinySongstress · 02/05/2021 07:39

I don't think it's a phobia but this ASMR trend really distresses me.

I HATE the really clear, intense sounds of something slowly scratching or popping or slow breathing. There was some played on the radio the other day and it really bothered me, I had to hit the off button immediately.

Sparklingbrook · 02/05/2021 07:42

This thread puts me in mind of The Speakmans they fix people of all their phobias in about 20 minutes. 🤔

I hate Daddy Long Legs but only if they are inside. Outside is fine.

I don’t think I have any genuine phobias, I just dislike things.

Pyewackect · 02/05/2021 07:43

Clowns. Bizarre I'll admit but they made me shudder.

CovidCorvid · 02/05/2021 07:53

I don’t even know of my phobia has a name but I really struggle being somewhere I can’t get out of easily. I don’t think it’s claustrophobia because I could go caving, in a sunbed, etc. It’s more being some distance from an exit.

So on a train I can’t go in the middle of a carriage, I struggle with the far end of a supermarket, I have panic attacks in the security bit of airports as I’m nowhere near a door, I’m really bad on planes but it’s not the actual flying which bothers me...in fact I’m worse once we’ve landed as I just want to run for the door and it takes ages.

I know someone who has a severe phobia of buttons.

WhatsALieIn · 02/05/2021 09:04

@thistimelastweek
@Billandben444

I am 38 and have had a button phobia since about 4 years old.
It effects my every day life (but I can laugh about it- like everyone else does!)

I love it when I hear there’s other people with the same thing.

I hate it when people say “aw you’re scared of buttons”
So I say “NO- I am not SCARED of buttons, they just make me gag and want to vomit or feel horrible”

HoxtonBonnet · 02/05/2021 09:48

That's really interesting to see other people have button phobia. My ds15 has this. Since he was old enough to articulate he has always insisted on soft stretchy jogging bottoms and t shirts - no buttons. He hates his school uniform but does wear it. All his duvet covers are zip-up!

I have a fear of not being able to breathe/choking. I find swallowing pills very difficult and found weaning both dc terrifying!

I scream and hide under a blanket if they're flying around, but I can get quite close if they're sitting still. Same with moths.

I really, really don't like touching dead flowers. Makes me shudder and cringe.

10000% this. It’s the most hideous noise, sort of tickles and itches the inside of my ears. Just awful
FiveGensOfLove · 02/05/2021 09:55

Jewellery. Especially chain necklaces. Even typing the word makes me shudder. Can’t touch any of it. If you’re wearing a lot of it, especially more than one chain, I’ll struggle to speak to you.
And men wearing chains is an automatic turnoff. The whole Normal People/Connor’s chain thing was the most incomprehensible thing about the last year for me! Sad
