What to do about DH's snoring?

Hey MNetters!

DH's snoring is disturbing nearly every night of my sleep and most nights, we end up in separate beds.

Anybody had any success with sorting out their partner's snoring? I don't want to erode our closeness by ending up permanently in separate beds but it's heading in that direction.

He's very fit and healthy, in his 40s, doesn't drink. We read that being overweight and drinking makes snoring worse but neither of those apply.

I use earplugs but they hurt my ears and I can still hear him through them.

All suggestions welcome!

Why would seperate bedrooms erode your closeness? I love my room, it hasn't affected my marriage.

First I would suggest a sleep clinic to rule out sleep apnoea.

TheSongOfTheSea · 01/05/2021 18:41

Thanks for your reply @gamerchick

I guess just because we miss out of waking up together or having spontaneous morning sex Blush My grandparents had separate rooms and it sort of feels like i'm in their relationship. I'm only in my 30s so I'm not ready for that!

Then he's going to have to put the work in to sort it out. It's unfair just letting you suffer.

I would suggest he goes to his GP. Nobody on here can diagnose him and it could be something serious causing it.

TheSongOfTheSea · 01/05/2021 20:19

Thanks @MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix

I guess we've just seen a lot of snake oil on the Internet and wondered whether any of it has worked for anybody? Not really looking for a diagnosis Smile

Will definitely send him off to the GPS though.

Without a diagnosis, how can you find an effective solution? Agree go to see GP. Could be anything.

JobHunting10 · 02/05/2021 09:42

Ah just see your latest update
Worth reading up on the NHS website too - it lists various causes

He needs to rule out sleep apnoea, as that is eventually life threatening if not treated.

Has he ever broken his nose? My DH has, at least twice, it's even visibly wonky. He snores like a road drill sometimes. After he fell a couple of years ago A&E checked it & it wasn't broken that time but he has a deviated septum which is probably making the problem worse. They said it should be fixable if he wants to do something about it... I definitely do!

Miljea · 02/05/2021 10:39

After ruling out sleep apnoea, try this.

It's not attractive but it's saved my marriage! 😊

ThankYouDebbie · 02/05/2021 10:47

None of the gadgets my DP tried worked. He didn't go for the losing weight or stopping drinking options Hmm. Separate rooms for over 5 years now, no going back!

caringcarer · 02/05/2021 11:24

My dh used to snore all of the time and I could not cope with no sleep every night, it was worse than having a permanent newborn. He went to GP, he got sent to sleep clinic and it turned out he has sleep apnoea. Now he wears a mask to bed. No more snoring but air mask makes a small noise but I can sleep through that.

caringcarer · 02/05/2021 11:24

I add my dh has had his nose broken 3 times due to rugby and car accident.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 02/05/2021 11:35

Well worth trying an antisnoring mouthguard that they wear at night.

My DH got his off Amazon - after 20 years of snoring I can't believe we didn't get one sooner.

It has absolutely changed our lives we now can sleep in the same bed. Worth a try. I think it was about £25. I know some Dentists will make bespoke ones if you ask your dentist about antisnoring mouthguards - but we just thought it was worth trying the cheap version first.

Confusedandshaken · 02/05/2021 11:40

My husbands snoring combined with night terrors lead to me eventually moving into our spare room. It was a real game changer for me and I sleep so much better now. However I do occasionally wake up because my own snoring is disturbing me which makes me wonder if I was sometimes blaming him unfairly!

TheSongOfTheSea · 02/05/2021 11:59

Thanks all, this is all really useful and what I was looking for. Star

lovescaca · 16/05/2021 20:33

I'm in the same boat as you op! But I'm desperate for us to have separate rooms, I just can't deal with been awoken every night with snoring! It's not even normal snoring it's like a loin snoring next to me! He's not having any it though. Ps I'm 31

mummog · 16/05/2021 23:35

My husband snores when he's on his back. I nudge him to get him to turn to his front and that helps ... for some reason!

Makes me almost as twitchy as dh's snoring. Though I've been guilty of it, recentlyBlush

stressfuljune · 16/05/2021 23:59

Is it like a sports mouthguard? I'm intrigued how they work. DH snoring drives me mad. I believe cutting out dairy / lactose helps

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 17/05/2021 17:32

The guard holds the bottom jaw slightly forwards, and keeps the airway open when they're asleep. I was honestly at the point where I wanted to murder DH. It's completely stopped any noises AT ALL. Miracle cure!
