Road trip in California

Hi just looking for some advice and top tips. I’m planning on doing a road trip around California in 2023 with DH and DS who will be 10. Are there any definite highlights or no nos that I need to do/avoid? Need to keep our DS occupied otherwise he will just sit in the car all day with his iPad and not take in any surroundings so looking for lots of stops etc. Also what’s the best time of year etc. Don’t want deathly hot but then again don’t want it to be just mild. We usually go on an all inclusive holiday in the Caribbean so this will be a bit of a change for us but excited for the adventures that could lie ahead

Thanks in advance for your tips x

You can drive from San Franscisco to LA on the ocean road. That’s a really nice drive -great scenery and there is a beach where you can see sea lions. SAN Francisco is good- Alcatraz is really good. Grand Canyon definitely a must see. Las Vegas and Santa Fe is nice too.

Don't miss Yosemite it's wonderful. Death Valley is interesting and we loved San Diego and San Fransisco. Los Vegas I could have done without and The Grand Canyon I enjoyed. Fantastic place for a drive holiday.

We did a west coast trip with an 8 year old and a 6 six old. They loved it.

Wished I hadn't bothered with Vegas, but I know lots of people say their kids loved it. We drove to Disneyland via Calico ghost town, which was a lovely journey. Of course, Disney was brilliant and far more laid back than Florida.

We reduced the driving time by taking an internal flight from Anaheim to San Fran, then drove to Yosemite. It was awesome! We stayed just outside the park in a place called Rush Creek Lodge, which was perfect for us and very kid friendly. The boys' highlight was seeing bears and a rattlesnake when out exploring. We could have happily spent the whole holiday there to be honest.

We found accommodation in Yosemite and San Fran was really expensive, so factor that in. The driving was pretty easy, but the distance is much more than it seems on the map.

We were there about this time of year, and the weather was very changable. It went from 90 degrees one day, to cold an rainy the next.

Whatever you do, I am sure you are all going to love it.

Can't miss Lake Tahoe for a few days. So lovely to take a boat ride out on the lake. Emerald Bay is a lovely walk. And the kids all love it.

Monterey aquarium is a must do. Anne take a whale watching trip from there. Also look at the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz. Kids love it.

We did LA to SF for our honeymoon & a few years later visited San Diego. Highlights were:

Winchester Mystery House, San Jose
San Diego Zoo
Santa Monica beach
Balboa Park, SD
Universal Studies
Disneyland
Las Vegas (took 6hrs to drive from LA)
Ghost hunt in Old Town, SD

Timing-wise: our honeymoon was Nov-Dec & weather was lovely, warm & sunny. San Diego holiday was July - very hot & sunny - we went for ComiCon.

I reccomend
Calaveras Big trees national park.
Columbia state historic park. It's a small preserved town, you can pan for gold, drink sarsaparilla in the the saloon and ride the stagecoach and get held up by Black Bart.
Lake Tahoe (Zepher cove is nice)
Yosemite
Crater Lake
and more but my brain is tired from work.

Have done this trip a couple of times. Fantastic.
Fly into SF, 4 nights there. Then into Yosemite, 4 nights. Drive along coast via Santa Cruz, Monterey, pismo beach, mooro bay, Monterey, Carmel, Santa Barbara. Usually a night/two at each place. Finally LA Disney for last few days.
Yosemite was just beautiful. Did canoeing on Merced. Lots of walks. Star gazing from glacier point.
Whale watching and elephant seals amazing.
Loved loved all of it. PlAnnjng to do it again soon.

If you go anywhere near Palm Springs be sure to visit the Cabazon dinosaurs.

We drove up from San Diego to San Fransisco over 10 days - it was a lot of driving! We flew past LA so didn't see a lot there, but stayed at some lovely places along the way. Would definitely recommend a couple of nights in San Diego, its lovely there.

SD wasn't somewhere I'd really considered as somewhere to visit before that, and we originally wanted to fly into SF and drive down the coast but the flights worked the way round.

San Fran was really cool, he'll love Alcatraz but maybe watch the movie Escape From Alcatraz before you go so he knows what it was all about. We watched it while we were there and were glad we did as the tour obviously tells you all about how they did it. But yes definitely need to book.

We thought about adding Yosemite or Las Vegas etc but it added on so much more driving we decided to do it as a separate trip another time.

Also the weather was a bit changeable as we went in Feb, so Yosemite was actually snowed in, while San Diego was sunny and lovely.

For us it was mainly about food and shopping, so we basically planned our route following Trip Advisor's best diners etc along the way. Be aware that thieves target rental cars, as the license plates will show that you're not local. So don't leave anything valuable in your car while you're out and about. Obvs being a road trip, you will have all your stuff in the boot, but keep your valuables on you. We learned this the hard way Sad resulting in a trip to the embassy to get a new passport for DP and the loss of thousands of £ worth of electricals he'd left in his rucksack in the car! luckily I'd kept mine in my handbag

Laguna Beach was beautiful, and the sealions and sea otters etc all along the coast were gorgeous! We even briefly saw a whale on a boat trip, although it was quite elusive!

We went without the DCs so not sure what there is specifically for children, but the aquarium at Monterey was great. General beachiness and lots of burgers may help too!

Billandben444 · 03/05/2021 07:29

I'd leave Vegas for another time as a 10-yr old won't want to be driving all the time. We did a similar trip twice with similarly aged children and would recommend:

Book cheaper motels en route with a pool (gives him fun time at the end of a long drive).
Choose better hotels for stays of a couple of nights and make sure they're central to what you want to see.
Mine loved the Pacific Coast Highway - Monterey, Hearst Castle, defo stay at Madonna Inn.
We flew into LA and stayed on the coast for 2 nights (near but not on Venice Beach) to acclimatise. Don't waste much time on beaches - it's a long way to go for that.
They liked Universal Studios but bored stiff by Disney.
San Francisco is a mixed bag - cold and damp - but there's enough to see to make it worthwhile, ride a cable car, boat trip to Alcatraz (wrap up warm).
Take lots of pictures by familiar landmarks (Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood sign etc) as these will mean more to him when he gets older. If you had time to visit Monument Valley or Bruce Canyon they're pretty impressive and he might enjoy the links to the Wild West and Native Americans.
Have a great trip.

@Billandben444

Nice to see someone else mentioning the Madonna Inn.
I usually recommend it on these threads Grin
I love that crazy place.

Liverbird77 · 03/05/2021 10:04

All the places mentioned are fab. I will add Lake Tahoe. It is so chilled! Swimming is great, everyone is friendly. It might be worth a couple of days there as a break.

RosieLeaLovesTea · 03/05/2021 18:52

Wow I’d completely forgotten about the Madonna Inn. We didn’t stay there but we did stop for a look around 😊

RampantIvy · 03/05/2021 19:16

Nice to see someone else mentioning the Madonna Inn

I mentioned it as well @ItsCokeFFS Grin
We ate dinner there one night. I had read about it in a Sunday newspaper a few years beforehand. It's so quirky.

ItsCokeFFS · 04/05/2021 08:53

@RampantIvy

Apologies, didn't spot that!

Last time we stayed there there was some sort of "tea dance" thing going on.

Made it even more surreal. Felt like we had accidentally stumbled into a David Lynch film Grin

APurpleSquirrel · 04/05/2021 10:25

Can recommend Hash House A Go Go in Hillcrest, San Diego (huge portions!) & Island Prime on San Diego harbour (expensive but very good food).

Yosemite is an amazing place but book early and arrive early. The centre was incredibly busy when we were there.
