What happened to my rubbish?

Our local council offer a very reasonably priced collection service for the disposal of large items. With big queues, still, for the tip, I booked a collection for:

  • electric lawnmower
  • microwave
  • vacuum cleaner
  • printer
  • mouldy wicker laundry basket

The rules are that you put it at the edge of your premises by 7:30am. I did it the night before just before bed.

I got up at about 7am and noticed it had all gone. My thought process at the time was "lovely, what an efficient service" and "good job I didn't wait to put it out in the morning".

Later I got an email from the council to say they'd tried to collect but had found nothing left for them.

I know scrap metal sometimes "disappears" and I can understand someone maybe thinking e.g. the Hoover might be handy for parts or something. But everything? Including the mouldy laundry basket? Grin

Local wombles?

gamerchick · 01/05/2021 15:51

You'll probably find them for sale on Facebook pages with a drop off offer for fuel. Lots of people get ripped off with knackered stuff like that.

One of the things I miss most about living in the city is the ability for absolutely anything and everything out outside to disappear in minutes.

ShaunaTheSheep · 01/05/2021 16:05

We always put junk at the end of the drive to see if it goes, before making a tip run. No idea who takes it but if it's useful to someone else...🤷‍♀️

saltychoc · 01/05/2021 16:07

That's normal some places I've lived - in other places you could leave a suitcase full of £50 notes outside your drive, on one would touch it!

Don't forget to get a refund from the council and hopefully your old stuff gets repaired and reused.

There won't be a refund. I'm most concerned that it's all going to turn up dumped somewhere.

Pretty normal round here. If its still there after a day, I bring it back in and then take it to the tip. Rarely have I needed to do that. Much rather someone else make use of it.

MusicMenu · 01/05/2021 22:33

If you just leave it out for randoms to take isn't there a strong possibility that it or bits if it will end up fly tipped?

I've had all sorts taken from the end of our drive if I've put them out - old lawnmower that needed handle fixing but worked fine, bags of clothes, toys, furniture. Its incredible what people will take but I'm always very happy for them to do so, its a good way of recycling.

LavendulaAngustifolia · 02/05/2021 21:47

Why would anyone go to the trouble of flytipping your rubbish?

TriciaMcMillan · 02/05/2021 22:10

@LavendulaAngustifolia I assume the OP's concern is that whoever took it will then decide it's actually mostly junk and flytip what they don't want, which seems like a pretty reasonable concern.

Not that the rubbish fairy took it with the express purpose of flytipping it on her behalf...

I spilled juice inside a drawer a few years ago and after wiping it I set the drawer outside to dry and some fucker nicked it!! Grin
