Do you think masks will stay?

They keep saying "all restrictions" will lift on June 21st.

Do people think Masks will go?

I am setting up a business that needs them now, but not sure if this will be an ongoing cost.

Yes

BingBunnyIsAnnoying · 01/05/2021 10:07

I think that masks will remain compulsory in shops and on transport for longer than June. I think maybe in the tail end of the year the rules may change

I read yesterday that there's 22 million people living in areas of this country that haven't had a covid death for a month. Another stat was that only 1/1,010 have covid

There's no doubt that we're making great progress. Uptake of the vaccine is expected to be less though as the age groups get younger

I think that you will find a lot of people will wear masks for the next year or two regardless. Personally I can't stand them and now only go to a shop if it's for food whereas before I would browse clothes shops etc

Keepyourdistance000 · 01/05/2021 10:07

I hope so as I quite like hiding my double chin and ugly teeth.

I think they will reappear when it's cold/flu season like they do in Japan.

Temp023 · 01/05/2021 10:08

Not on my face they won’t, never actually believed they made any real difference any at!

Sparklingbrook · 01/05/2021 10:08

Yes I do. Not massively happy about it but I can't see them saying not to any time soon. I expect a lot of people will suddenly become 'exempt'.

Temp023 · 01/05/2021 10:09

Although I do enjoy the surreptitious singing along to the muzac in supermarkets!

EileenGC · 01/05/2021 10:10

They won't go overnight, certainly not for indoor events and public transports or shops. I would still budget for them for after the 21st of June. It's not a magic date.

squashyhat · 01/05/2021 10:11

It will take a good while for me to feel comfortable not wearing them in shops and I think they will be back in the autumn anyway, so regardless of the "rules" I'm keeping mine on.

EileenGC · 01/05/2021 10:11

I will miss singing all day long without anyone noticing it. Next winter I might also pretend I have a cold on a particularly freezing day because I like my nose staying warm!
Schrutesbeets · 01/05/2021 10:12

I think most things will stay and we're kidding ourselves if we really believe things are going to change in June.
There are numerous vacancies currently out for Covid marshals, inspectors etc etc which are to start in July with minimum 12 month contracts.
The govs own forecast is that the 3rd wave of deaths will occur between July - September, and that's not even usual flu season. So I find it incredibly hard to believe anything is going to change.
Even if by law things change, I suspect businesses will set their own rules and many will keep a lot of restrictive rules.

MorganSeventh · 01/05/2021 10:12

I think they will probably become optional over summer, but may return in autumn if cases rise and/or new strains emerge.

Vintagevixen · 01/05/2021 10:15

Bloody hope not, they don't prevent anything anyway. But it wouldn't surprise me if the government held onto them, following the actual science isn't their thing anyway and masks make them seem to be doing something so....

elliejjtiny · 01/05/2021 10:17

I hope not. I really struggle with masks but not severely enough to be exempt. At the moment I am avoiding going anywhere non essential that requires masks to be worn but that means I haven't been anywhere fun since February last year.

It sounds like they cause you distress, therefore you are exempt. You are not required to wear one, seek a Drs appt, or justify your exemption to anyone.
ConnieCaterpillar70 · 01/05/2021 10:35

Unless you're using a single use medical grade one and as directed (which few are), they're nothing more than a placebo. Fabric ones are little more than fashion accessories, and several countries have banned their use.

I hope they don’t. Wearing my badge makes me feel like a leper with a bell.

Kentuki · 01/05/2021 10:40

After June 21st I’m getting an exempt lanyard. I will wear a mask around the supermarket but if I want a full day mooching around the shops I won’t be wearing one.

Schrutesbeets · 01/05/2021 10:41

You don't have to wear a badge!
Susie477 · 01/05/2021 10:41

I expect mask wearing in enclosed public spaces to continue until everyone is fully vaccinated. After having been caught out so many times before the government are not going to take any chances now we have come this far.

Magnificentmug12 · 01/05/2021 10:43

It will be too hot and uncomfortably to wear one in the summer. I think they will come back for autumn/winter though

Sparklingbrook · 01/05/2021 10:44

You can buy a pack of 4 'I am mask exempt' badges in Home Bargains for 99p.

Echobelly · 01/05/2021 10:45

I think it would be smart for them to stay in places of indoor gathering through at least another winter. Whether they will, I don't know. There's a chance they'll stop being mandated over summer, but if they do that they'll probably have to bring them back in autumn/winter.

topcat2014 · 01/05/2021 10:49

Simple commerce will mean that shops will stop requiring them as soon as possible to avoid putting off customers from returning.

They will balance the over anxious mask keepers against the group that won't go back until you can be mask free.

I think the second group will outweigh the first.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 01/05/2021 11:25

If vaccinations are the answer, masks should be gone by the end of the year when everyone is fully vaccinated.
