Once more unto the breach? (Also Henry V)

clary · 30/04/2021 22:31

Henry V is the shout surely?

HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 30/04/2021 22:33

‘Once more unto the breach’ is the st crispins speech.

Maybe Richard III? ‘A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!’?

Flyonawalk · 30/04/2021 22:35

Henry V. Very rousing and stirring! Good to compare with Kenneth Branagh’s Henry.

Flyonawalk · 30/04/2021 22:36

...is it the speech before Harfleur? ‘God for Harry, England and St George...’?

HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 30/04/2021 22:37

Or this scene? Also Richard III - might be what you’re thinking of? www.opensourceshakespeare.org/views/plays/play_view.php?WorkID=richard3&Act=5&Scene=3&Scope=scene

@Flyonawalk

That's the "once more" speech. I reckon it'll be that one.
HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 30/04/2021 22:44

But that’s the same speech OP says she’s never heard of @SOLINVICTUS

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 30/04/2021 22:44

Yes it's the once more into the breech, he's on a horse and talks about peace Rome demeanour and war tiger demeneour.

The St crispins stuff is different or a different part, the part she's got is a 1 in rousing speech, this part is 10. I thought I was going mad!!

Googled Larry Oliver famous speech etc kept the first St crispins boring part.

Agree with pp that the St Crispin's Day speech is Henry V. There's a clip of Laurence Olivier and that speech from the 1944 film on YouTube. He's not on a horse (although he was in other parts of the film); he's walking around the camp, rallying his men. The music's pretty rousing. I know a lot of the film's music is by William Walton so I'm assuming that the music for the speech was by him.

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 30/04/2021 22:46

The part she was given, if its the same speech was v boring.
This part is far better.

I've just specifically googled Larry, once more into the breech and its very different and far better than the earlier part.

'Once more into the breach' is from Henry V but it's the speech at the siege of Harfleur (about half way through the play). The St Crispin's day speech is the big one at the Battle of Agincourt ('We few, we happy few, we band of brothers...' etc). If you're thinking of rousing Larry-on-a-horse speeches it's likely to be one of those two.

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 30/04/2021 22:53

Arf, Kate the shrew, are you are Shakespeare expert 😁, it's the once more into the breech I'm thinking of.
I don't like the other one and can't believe if the two it's that boring one she's learning.

cariadlet · 30/04/2021 22:58

Yes, it was the Harfleur speech that you must have remembered. Laurence Olivier is on a horse for that one and it's definitely more rousing. It's also on YouTube so maybe you could show your dd even if it isn't the one that her school gave her.

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 30/04/2021 23:02

Yes I will caries let, I'm just so surprised Google nor u tube showed it up dd trying to imply I'm mad

It’s rousing all right, but I’m never keen on Henry dividing the army into the nobles and ‘base’ yeomen ‘of grosser blood’. (And it leads on to the next Harfleur speech, where he threatens to impale the town’s naked infants on spikes, and to have his soldiers rape all the defending army’s daughters.)

Yes, I am Blush obviously it's the sort of expertise that almost never comes in handy in real life Grin
