How to clean stained mugs

Bbq1 · 30/04/2021 17:53

I have a number of fairly new mugs that have stained badly inside due to tea. I have tried soaking them in bleach but it didn't help. If anyone has any tried and tested methods they can pass on I'd much appreciate it.

I've always soaked my stained cups in a sink of sterilising fluid/tablets (Milton or a shops own works) and they come out clean every time

NannyR · 30/04/2021 17:57

I use the oxi action powder for laundry, a teaspoon of powder in each mug with hot water.

Astonish it’s about £1 in the cheap shops

Bit of paste, quick wipe and they’re clean.

Milton for me too.
Bad stains sometimes use baking powder and vinegar but that's more on pots and things.

bloodywhitecat · 30/04/2021 17:59

Have you tried rubbing the stains with bicarbonate of soda on a damp cloth?

Almostascot · 30/04/2021 17:59

Bicarbonate of soda made into a paste with lemon juice and scrub the cup. I learnt that trick when I worked in a little cafe 20 years ago and it’s always worked for me.

Dentures cleaning tablets

SydneyCarton · 30/04/2021 18:01

I use a couple of denture tablets left to soak for a couple of hours, overnight for bad stains

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 30/04/2021 18:04

Magic sponge

wonkylegs · 30/04/2021 18:10

Bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar (although malt works ok too) small amount in bottom leave until stops fizzing and then wipe round with abrasive washing up sponge and wash as normal
I cleaned DHs heavily stained work mug like this and that went from something that should be binned to sparkling.

Dishwasher!

Housewife2010 · 30/04/2021 18:22

Do you have a dishwasher? Ours are never stained. If not, use some washing powder.

Bamaluz · 30/04/2021 18:24

Salt and a good scrubbing.

thevassal · 30/04/2021 18:26

rub with salt and tiny tiny tiny (like a damp finger) bit of water - v. cheap and no chemicals

TaraR2020 · 30/04/2021 18:27

Scrub with lemon and salt or bicarb

TaraR2020 · 30/04/2021 18:27

If hard water area consider a lime scale remover

Bbq1 · 30/04/2021 19:13

Thanks everyone, so many great ideas. @BearGum we don't have a dishwasher due to having a small kitchen. @thevassal and @TaraR2020 I will try your options first tonight as I have lemon and salt available. Thanks.

Milton here

notagainmummy · 30/04/2021 20:06

Few drops of bleach and water and leave to soak. My once reliable dishwasher has stopped getting stains from mugs recently despite all the normal tricks.

dementedpixie · 30/04/2021 20:08

Astonish paste works for me too

FoodieToo · 30/04/2021 20:10

Fill with water, good drop of bleach . Stir and leave for an hour then dishwasher afterwards !

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 30/04/2021 20:11

Very salty water for a bit

TeacupDrama · 30/04/2021 20:12

Salt the cheap salt 30p for huge container tub type, tiny tiny drop of water rub in with finger

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 30/04/2021 20:12

Soda crystals and hotcwater. Leave to soak

slothy · 30/04/2021 20:13

Use the pink stuff paste and a microfibre cloth and give it a good scrub.
