If you use the title 'Dr' in a professional capacity, when else do you choose to use it?

I'm 'Dr' at work. Except, I'm not really, as clients and colleagues all use my first name, I'm only 'Dr' on important bits of paper.

At home, I never use my title with my married name, at the kids' schools, for anything medical related (last thing I want is a doctor assuming medical knowledge I don't have!) or on flight bookings (ditto airline staff).

I just randomly used my title when ordering a compost bin, and it actually felt quite nice (if a bit odd). I am (with Dr Biden) of the view that, if you've earned it, you have a right to use it whenever you damn well want. Maybe I'm missing a trick and should use it more in daily life.

I use it when someone asks my title (because it's the accurate one but also because Mrs Trunumber isn't me, it's DH mum)

If I had worked hard for a doctor title, I think I'd use it all the time 😂😂 you earned it and deserve the recognition

In general I don't use it outside of professional capacity. The one additional place I do is for travel/frequent flyer schemes. I was told it could help in get upgrades, etc. But can't say it ever worked for me :(

Exh uses it, well prof now and twice checking in for flights for family trips he was asked if he could be called upon in a medical emergency, both times he laughed and suggested they ask me instead as I have a St. John's ambulance first aid certificate, he's got a PhD

I have it on my bank cards (except Amex who wouldn't let me for some obscure reason that I couldn't be bothered to pursue). I thought it might mean if my cards were stolen people might question whether the person using them looked like a Dr. It doesn't.

A colleague (we're academics so lots of people are Dr or Prof) was approached on a plane to look at someone who the flight attendants thought was having a heart attack. He was all set to apply his rudimentary first aid knowledge when the man sitting next to him volunteered to go instead - he was a consultant cardiologist so his title was Mr. It turned out there were several very highly qualified heart specialists on the flight, travelling back from a conference in the US. I'm not aware that travelling as Dr Chemenger has ever earned me even a tiny benefit.

This is why I’ve never used my title on flights. I’m prone to fits of English awkward embarrassment and don’t trust myself not to just muddle through with delivering the baby, or whatever.

trunumber quite right too! Unfortunately that doesn’t work for me as MIL is also Dr McGroogle. And would never dream of being Mrs ( although addresses all my cards as Mrs 😆)

We know a lot of people with PhDs (we're both academics, although I don't have mine yet) and I only know one or two who use it outside work. They do have other form for other gobshitery...

Squirrel26 · 29/04/2021 16:16

For some reason it is on my National Trust membership. Otherwise I prefer to keep it secret!

When I was in hospital after having a baby a friend came in to visit and asked the midwives where she could find Dr Chemenger. I was registered as Mrs Chemenger. The instant my friend left the midwife came in to ask if I was a medical doctor in disguise. Apparently that would have been a very underhand thing to do. They were pleased to hear I was a doctor of engineering instead and none of their less than complementary opinions about doctors had offended me.
