Adding learner driver to car insurance

BraxtonChic · 29/04/2021 10:41

I'm with RAC and just found out I cannot add learner DS to my insurance as a named driver.

I naively thought all insurers did this for an increased premium and now I'm not sure what to do.

Do I need a specialist insurance or is it just a shop around exercise?

I see plenty of learners round my way practicing in non driver instructor cars so assuming some insurers do it!

You can take out separate specific insurance for this.

Yep - when ds1 was learning I took out separate learner driver insurance for him on my car (sorry - can't remember the company but found them by Googling learner driver insurance) for a fixed period of time - think it was 3 months. Didn't cost a fortune (not as much as it costs now he can actually drive..!).

I had the same with mine - they gave me the option to cancel with no penalty as they couldn't provide me with what I needed though. Plenty of insurers let you do it - just need to use a comparison site and see what comes up. They're all expensive though .....

Interestingly, just checked and I re-insured with RAC!

My son has his own learner insurance with a company called Collingwood, we paid £100 upfront and then its £25 a month and we can cancel anytime. I used the same company for when my daughter was learning too. Nice and straightforward never had any issues.

I used Marmalade, they insure the learner on your car separately and so it doesn't affect your main car insurance in the event of an accident. You can choose to roll monthly, or for longer lengths of time I think. They do have some limitations on age and type of car.

Thank you everyone!

When I asked RAC if he could have separate insurance, they just said you can't insure the same car twice Confused, and my only option was to cancel my (newly renewed) policy for £55 and find a new insurer - no mention of these specialist separate learner policies!

I'll take a look into that and thanks for the specific recommendations Smile

with some learner driver policies you can choose which days to insure depending on how often you think DS will practise.

I've got dh on mine, just added as a name driver, so it is possible. It might be because he's old tho, maybe they're funny about it for young drivers? We're with Hastings
