DS2 has come home with a lovely bag of sweets and little toys. He says its something to do with someone's religion, I'm assuming because of the time of year they maybe Muslim but I'm intrigued to know what it saysbon the bag?

Can anyone tell me what this says? Possibly Arabic

رَمَضَان is the Arabic for Ramadan, if that helps - I think I can see it (?).

dragoncena · 28/04/2021 16:08

This is Arabic script, but it doesn't actually mean anything in Arabic. It's possible it is a Farsi (Persian) word as it too uses Arabic script. This is Ramadan, so most likely sweets to celebrate it.

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 28/04/2021 16:11

Does it say Ramadan? It's super cute and lovely that the child is sharing their culture 😊

dragoncena · 28/04/2021 16:17

Definitely not Ramadan. The transliteration is 'qarqiya' an', which as I said doesn't mean anything in Arabic.

ayla1 · 28/04/2021 16:27

Also doesn't mean anything in Persian...

depopsa · 28/04/2021 16:32

Urdu? Some Kurdish is also written in Arabic script.

Papadontpreachimintroubledeep · 28/04/2021 16:35

According to my friend who's fluent in Arabic and urdu it's neither of those but in Arabic script it says qurqiyan which doesn't mean anything in that language but lots of other languages use Arabic script.
Could it not be the name of the boy who gave it to him?

dragoncena · 28/04/2021 16:37

Okay problem solved. 'Qarqiyaan' is an ancient tradition in the Gulf States celebrated on the Middle days of Ramadan. Dried fruit and nuts (this is what qarqiyaan means) are placed in a pocket bag around the neck of children.

nilefm.com/life/article/1466/ramadan-traditions-from-around-the-globe This refers to a Qarqia'an tradition in Kuwait. Could that be it?

depopsa · 28/04/2021 16:39

Snap

I used to participate in qarqiaan as I attended a Saudi school! We’d go round with little bags or baskets and we’d have sweets fruits and nuts given to us. You’ll find it happens in Saudi/ uae

Carnegie100 · 28/04/2021 18:12

So interesting. I have studied Arabic abroad and I have learnt something new.

Sh05 · 28/04/2021 18:52

It's an eastern Arabian celebration that takes place in the middle of the Ramadhan. it's cultural and not a religious celebration so possible this child's family are celebrating. Today/ yesterday is the 15th of the month.

Hellocatshome · 28/04/2021 20:43

Ah brilliant thank you, I have told my son it is qarqiaan and its because it is the middle day of Ramadan. I think its lovely that his classmate is sharing the days/celebrations that are important to him and his family with the class.

It’s a celebration of the birth of Al-Hasan ibn Ali, the first grandson of the Prophet Mohammed PBUH Smile
