Inexpensive Present for 18th birthday

My nephew is 18 at the end of May.

There is a small, outdoor family party planned and I've been invited. I'd like to take him a gift but I can't afford to spend very much - maybe up to £30 max. His mum & dad have high paid jobs and are buying him a car & a PS6 (?) and I know other relatives will be buying expensive gifts. I'm at the other end of the spectrum income-wise.

For a bit of background - he's car mad, is about to start a higher apprenticeship in quite a technical area, likes animals.

What about a nice car cleaning kit. I know when I hit my first car I loved cleaning it.

Honestly at 18 I would have rather had the £30 cash in a card than a token present

Got not hit

You can get petrol voucher in Sainsbury’s, maybe buy that and an 18 balloon to attached to it. I think it’s better than giving money because you spent time going to get it rather than shoving money in a card and the balloon makes it a bit special.

buy him a petrol can, and give him some money for petrol.
Put the money into pound coins and put them in the can, attached a balloon/ribbons etc

or a can of deicer and an ice scraper.

the petrol can one is a lovely idea @steppemum, very thoughtful and original.

Thanks Grin

when my nephew was 18, I bought a helium balloon and made a bag of coins. The bag was the weight for the balloon. It took him a while to realise! it was a nice way to give money, looks fun, but also as it is a bag of pound coins, no-one can see how much, so it is useful for that when lots of expensive rellies around

Some lovely suggestions on here - thank you.

If I go with the petrol can would it be cheesy to paint his name on the side of it eg "X's petrol can"

The petrol can and balloon are genius! I was about to say that for the boys (it was only boys with cars in my sixth form) 18ths they had hard cash disguised as "petrol vouchers" which were just brilliant!

If he is into cars and space you can get his name engraved on the next Mars Rover! It's free and you get a little "travel ticket". That might be something cool to keep?

He will have plenty of big gifts and keepsake gifts.

my son would hate this if cheesily done.

If nicely done he would smile, but honestly? I would leave it plain.

How about £30 worth of premium bonds?
