Which job would you go for?

Hi Mumsnet. I'm currently awake at 3am fretting over whether or not to take a job I've been offered. I wondered if the Mumsnet hive mind would be able to offer any insight as to whether to take the job or stick in my current role.

JOB A - Where I currently am:

  • Very good pay
  • A contracting role - so a great day rate but no sick pay, paid holiday, pension etc
  • Very chilled out work flow - get through about 2 hours work in a day and the rest of the time is just on stand by waiting for work to come in which rarely does. Money for nothing effectively.
  • Quite boring
  • I've been here for three years
  • The project will end at some point at which point my contract will end but theres no predicting when that would be. Could be three months, could be another year. Unlikely it would be longer than a year.
  • Free parking
  • Very flexible manager ie lets us nip out for doctors appt, take longer lunches etc as long as the work is done

JOB B - Where I've been offered:

  • Perm role so on paper looks like less money but will probably work out roughly the same after considering benefits and pension
  • For a reputable new bank in a more interesting role
  • The only thing that sticks out as a negative is shift work. I would be working either 6am until 2pm, 9-5 or 3pm until 10pm and this could be across any day of the week including weekends.

For context, I currently have no children but hope to try in the next few years, my partner is also a contractor currently on a longer term project than the one I'm on, and the commutes for both the roles are equal.

My answer is would you go for the new job or stay in the current role if you were me?!

Personally, in this climate the permanent role, simply for the job security!
I've worked as a contractor before, but for what I do the day rate far exceeds any package that perm could offer me - but the catch is it's more risky and many of my colleagues were laid off fitting the pandemic and still haven't found more work.
If you are more secure however, this might not appeal to you.
Have you worked shifts before, did you like it? I actually didn't mind when I did them below, I enjoyed the variety and having different time off to go to the shops etc. Only thing that would put me off is predictability - does it change at short notice?
The other important thing with the poem job is it sounds like it might build your skills more, opening you up to opportunities in the future. If you do have kids, this might give you more options for work, and more contacts. You may be able to freelance for example.
Hope this gives food for thought!

Thanks for the insight - the shifts are set six months in advance so plenty of scope for planning ahead.

I've decided to verbally accept the offer with the provisio that I have the weekend to think about it before signing an offer agreement!

If you don't have kids / aren't trying immediately, I'd go for B. Take the job security, and potentially a maternity package for the future!

@cocopidge exciting!! And congratulations 😁

I'd go for the second option because of the job security. Good luck!
