Places to live with affordable rent

LetsTalkRental · 27/04/2021 22:59

Posting this for traffic in chat. Apologies.

Where we currently live a 2 bed house is about £1,300 a month rent.
Flats are about £800-£1,200.

I really would like a lovely little house with a garden. Where we are currently it's no doable and would struggle to pay other bills on the £1,300 rent a month.

Would love to buy but not in a position too yet as cannot save either with the rent prices.

Could any of you point in the right direction to some lovely places to live with affordable rent?

I wouldn't struggle in my field to find another job (wouldn't just move without a job). DP maybe would but for what I do, I know we could get by on my wage.

What sparked my interest was I saw a brand 2 bed new build in Yorkshire for £800 a month. Would love to explore maybe other areas where we can rent a nice house and even hopefully get on the property ladder.

TIA.

I guess it depends where you need to work and how far you can commute as much as the cost as sometimes its low rents in places with high unemployment

LetsTalkRental · 27/04/2021 23:08

I didn't even think about the high unemployment areas 🤦🏻‍♀️. Not those areas.

I can commute but would prefer not to.

If you can work from home then I'd look at areas in Wales:

I’m in Glasgow and there are some very affordable areas. Our last flat was £450pcm (unfurnished) and we bought our three bedroom ex-HA house (with front and back gardens) for £70k in 2019.

There are nicer areas though, and you’d still get a lot more for your money than other parts of the UK. Glasgow is a brilliant city too, I’ve been here since 2013 and I love it.

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/04/2021 23:23

I'm near Glasgow and rents are nowhere near that.

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/04/2021 23:29

@amusedbush
That's what Dd pays for her 3 bed flat in Glasgow.
Admittedly Springburn, but where they are is fine, it's all on CCTV outside too.
Three beds with great storage.
I'd look into moving there myself if it wasn't for hospital issues.

Chester. You could rent a three/four bed house with garden in a nice area for £1300.
And nowhere in the UK is nicer than Chester, proximity to beaches, countryside, Liverpool and Manchester.

Just up the road the Wirral is also mainly lovely and most parts cheaper than Chester.

LetsTalkRental · 27/04/2021 23:38

@Hobnobsandbroomstick wow, the size of that garden!! Also like the last link with the kitchen!

@amusedbush that's crazy! 70k?! For a standard 2 bed property here you're looking at about £300k+. It's just stupid amounts.

Thank you for all the links and advice. Will get looking in these areas.

3/4 bed here is about £2000pcm Sad.

We’re in the east end, out Shettleston/Springboig way. DH is from here, I moved from Edinburgh to live with him in 2013 and we’ve had no issues.

Cheap as chips housing, five minutes from two supermarkets and the train station, and only 4 miles from the city centre.

Admittedly it was a complete fixer-upper (it didn’t even have central heating) so we had to put some serious cash into it but even renovated I doubt we’d get more than £100k for it.

For £300k you could buy the town and become our mayor Grin

LetsTalkRental · 27/04/2021 23:53

@amusedbush still a good price and wouldn't get that here for a shed Grin.

Ohh, a mayor that sounds interesting Grin.

...I want to move here, love going on holiday to Appledore. No garden, but you are within 5 minutes walking distance of the quay and a bit of a longer walk to the beach. Parking is a bit of a nightmare though.

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/04/2021 00:07

@amusedbush
I want to move to Govan, and people think I'm nuts!
I need to be near QEUH.
I think we'd all move to a garden flat in the west end with a parking space, but we're all not loaded!
