Audio book suggestions for DSD

Looking for audio book suggestions for DSD to listen to at night!

We read a book before bed and this won't change but she's starting to want to stay up after for more stories therefore pushing her bedtime later and later. Keeping a lamp on to read herself has her fighting sleep for a good hour or so and she subsequently blames the room for 'being too light' when told off for not going to sleep. So, I'm thinking of playing an audio book with the lights out and after she's had her book by me or her dad.

Any suggestions of suitable audio books would be great. Her bookshelf is currently full of early reader things (purely because I wasn't paying online or supermarket inflated prices on books during lockdown) but I'm thinking something longer than the 10 page books she had that I can drag across a few nights. Conscious some audio books add the dramatics in and not sure how Harry Potter say will play out/sound as a bedtime listen.

If it helps for book suggestions, she's just turned 7

The Winnie the Pooh stories are lovely - we have them read by Alan Bennett.

Just William read by Martin Jarvis is wonderful as well.

We also had Thomas the Tank Engine stories on tape.

Thomas might be a bit too young for her but the WtP is gently humorous and William is very funny but without any sense of threat or menace that might cause bad dreams.

DH and I still enjoy WtP and William now even though the "children" have all grown up and left home!

Roald Dahl? Just not The Witches

When I was little I loved my Roald Dahl tapes, George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Twits, Fantastic Mr Fox... all brilliant! And I liked Black Beauty on tape. There are lots of audiobooks available on Spotify, I bet there are play lists put together with kids’ stories

Jill Murphy - The Worst Witch books

We did this and had the entire set of Roald Dahl and Paddington. Then he’s progressed to Harry Potter and Percy Jackson :)

My DCs loved How To Train Your Dragon as they're read by David Tennant. His voice is amazing for children's books as he can do so many different characters, plus the stories of HTTYD are great too.

Ronald dahl seconded.

Slightly older:

The last dragonslayer

These are all ones we have enjoyed!

Secret garden. Heidi. Narnia series. Most are available on BorrowBox through the library.

There are some Famous Five stories on audio, we enjoyed those when the children were young.

My son has the mr gum stories. He also has dirty Bertie. Db is good because it’s short stories so it doesn’t matter if you fall asleep. Mr gum is just silly and fun.
Have you looked on iplayer? My 5 year old likes the bedtime story from CBeebies so there might be something appropriate there?

My 7year old loves the wishing chair and the enchanted forest series by Enid Blyton. She has also recently got into tom fletcher and likes the christmasaurus. Her very favourite for a long time was the wombles (except for chapter one because bungo or tomsk gets trapped. Shes not good with even mild peril 😁). She listens to audio books every night and shares my audible credits!

We have the worst witch on cd. They can be picked up cheaply from places like the works. She still goes back to those if she's feeling below par. I came in from work tonight with a sore back and she told me to lie down and listen to stories to cure it!! Im just about to put a terry pratchett (the truth) on my audible and take her advice 😁

Olga da Polga by Michael Bond. One dog and his Boy and The Abominables by Eva Ibbotson were ones enjoyed here. Our library has some audio books, which has been brilliant for trying out new ones.

For us any audio book at bedtime has to be a familiar one they have already heard at least once.

We've just listened to The Railway Children (free on BBC sounds app).
Check if your local library subscribed to the Libby app (most do). Loads of free audio books there.

Thank you! I wasn't expecting so many suggestions. I've made a list and going to look across Amazon prime audio, Spotify and our online library for some of the suggestions with the aim to start playing them from tomorrow x
