How often do you get a new phone?

I'm thinking of getting a new phone for my birthday, and was just interested to know how often you would generally expect to get a new phone? Old one is working OK but the battery is starting to drain quite quickly.

Mine is just over four years old and beginning to creak a bit.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 27/04/2021 20:44

When my contract runs out and I start to notice battery issues. So every 3 to 5 years.

isthismylifenow · 27/04/2021 20:44

Every 22 months when I upgrade my contract.

Honeyroar · 27/04/2021 20:45

The last iPhone 5 lasted six years. I’ve had the 8 about two years now, am praying it does a few more years. I had an X for a work phone and didn’t like it half as much.

TokyoSushi · 27/04/2021 20:46

When my contract runs out, so every 2/3 years

Mammaaof · 27/04/2021 20:48

Every 18 months when my contract runs out

AlCalavicci · 27/04/2021 20:48

Mine is at least 5 years old ( Samsung A5) and considering the amount it gets used esp listing to music its foi g remarkably well.
The battery is giving out a bit it fed needs charging every day but I listen to music for at least 5 hrs a day as well as MNing calls and text . So I can't complain.

DuesToTheDirt · 27/04/2021 20:50

When it's dead.

Frogartist · 27/04/2021 20:52

When it breaks and doesn't work! I don't understand why people replace things that work, such a waste. How often do you replace your washing machine or toaster?

AlCalavicci · 27/04/2021 20:52

The auto correct is shit too 🙄.

It's doing remarkably

A bit it def needs

Silverfly · 27/04/2021 20:54

The battery thing is quite annoying though Frogartist. Toasters carry on working just as well as they always did.

Every 12 months on apple upgrade programme.

rainbowthoughts · 27/04/2021 20:55

More often than most. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max, had the 11 pro Max for a year before that and an xs Max for about 6 months before that.

Gertie75 · 27/04/2021 20:55

I used to get one every 2 years with a contract until Martin Lewis said it's just an expensive loan, I then bought a refurbished phone for £199 and have a monthly contract for £15 which is unlimited calls, texts and 12gb data which I never get anywhere near.

Suzi888 · 27/04/2021 20:56

When it starts to glitch, around every two years.

Gertie75 · 27/04/2021 20:56

You can get a new battery for around £5

Silverfly · 27/04/2021 20:57

Yes, I could try replacing the battery instead.

Yes I would class that as " not working"
IHaveBrilloHair · 27/04/2021 20:57

When my last one dies, so 2/3 years.
I buy mine outright though.
I don't want credit or contract bills so buy older phones.
(Had debt issues in the past so don't get credit now)

H1978 · 27/04/2021 21:22

Every two years dh buys me a new phone. I then pass my old one down to dd2. Dd1 gets DH’s old phones. He also changes every two years.

Yumyumicedbuns · 27/04/2021 21:23

It’s really easy to change the battery yourself. I just bought a kit from Amazon and followed a YouTube video.

Pinkpaisley · 27/04/2021 21:24

Annually. I switched to a lease plan several years ago. I’m not normally one for having the latest and greatest, but the pricing actually works out well and it’s nice to just get a new phone automatically.

Daisy829 · 27/04/2021 21:24

Whenever dh upgrades his phone I take his old one. He’s a tech geek so it’s probs every 24 months or so. I’ll be honest, it’s all a bit wasted on me.

Watermelonsugar21 · 27/04/2021 21:42

I’ve only just replaced an iPhone 5 which I had for nearly 9 years! It actually still works. If apple didn’t do so many iOS updates I would have kept it even longer, but it got to the point where I couldn’t install or update the few apps that I use, like WhatsApp or Facebook.

I only replaced it with an iPhone 7 that cost £100 secondhand. I pay £9 a month for the data and unlimited calls/texts on a sim only contract. Spending any more than that per month is a waste of money in my opinion. I couldn’t care less about having a fancy phone, as long as it calls, texts and can take the odd photo then it’s all good!

And for the record, I’m only in my 20s.

bluetongue · 27/04/2021 21:50

I try not to replace them too often. Partly because I’m cheap and partly because I hate the whole throw away society thing.

There does come a point though where you don’t have much a choice. An iPhone 5s with a dodgy battery nearly got me stranded on a trip abroad last year (pre Covid). Bought a new model as soon I got home.
