Isn't it about time they found a cure for athlete's foot?

I am completely bored of it. No treatment does anything but keep it a bay.Sad

ok, this will be non-traditional...
I had a patch on the sole of my foot. Itchy as hell, Dr said use OTC stuff, did nothing. Got cross and mixed up a batch of:
vicks (the cold stuff; very anti fungal)
raw crushed garlic (anti fungal)
tea tree oil
lavender oil (both anti fungal)

slathered it on my foot and taped it down to minimise the stink.
Gave it a few days - took pad off. top layer of skin came too along with the fungal nasty :-)
a few days later, another few layers of skin came off in the bath, but fixed!

@EscapeTheCastle

Wowlikeireally....Advice for fungal nail? Not sure where to turn for help with thus as it's a new problem for me .
Visit a good foot health professional or podiatrist, the quicker you catch a fungal nail the more successful the outcome. I find this anyway with patients . You need to get treatment into the nail bed, and you will need a specialist to help with that.

I recently tried the same variant on a patch between toes, and while harder to slather/not stink it also worked very well...

Hmm. The toenail on my left big toe does fall off periodically, but it doesn't look like a fungal nail, it's not discoloured, crumbly or ridged.

I would get it checked out, they don’t all meet that criteria. It may be that you have the start of it in a corner of a nail this can keep reinfecting skin too.

Agree with suggestion of pompholyx eczema. Have you had scrapings to confirm it is fungal?

The problem is, I've stopped asking the GP as I just get fobbed off. The last time I visited the podiatrist, TBF, was probably 6 years ago. When I enquired at new GP surgery (moved house) I was told there isn't one in the NHS despite being diabetic.

I'll be gutted if it is 'diabetes' causing the issue as I've been asking for years. I don't have neuropathy if that's what you mean. I have normally fairly good control (hba1c usually below 7%).

OP, I feel your pain! Please post again if you do find a solution (and I will do the same). I don't mind throwing money at the issue. It's clear the NHS can't help with issues like this anymore. But who do you trust to go to? So many 'foot' specialists listed.

Unless you are a high risk diabetic you will struggle to get help onthe NHS, even then it is only nail trimming/ulcerative care etc. Not fungal issues as not deemed important, in my area at least! Fungal issues not to do with neuropathy, no. More that diabetics sugar levels etc can encourage yeast overgrowth and infections. If you are in a position to afford it, i would visit a good private foot health professional or podiatrist to get checked anyway every 6months at least. GP will do nothing.

I only got rid of my athlete's foot after I was treated for fungal nail 2-3 months on that and I have been clear of athlete's foot for 18 years now.

@WowIlikereallyhateyou do you need the tablets or cream terbinafine or both for fungus toe?
How long do you need to take the tablets for?

TheChosenTwo · 27/04/2021 23:03

I had a fungal nail infection which spread to 3 of my toenails in the end. The skin between my toes would also itch like crazy. Gp suggested the lamisil once thing which didn’t work so eventually I used one of those online doctors and paid for terbinafine tablets.
Cleared it up properly and I never had issues ever since. I honestly didn’t expect it to work so well but within a couple of weeks I could see the healthy nail beginning to grow through, it was truly miraculous. I had to provide some blood samples as it’s hard going on your kidneys (sketchy memory as it was a few years ago now) and I wouldn’t ever recommend those online doctors because you just never really know if they’re genuine but I took the chance myself and it paid off!
