Clueless DIY type question alert

My entire downstairs is floorboards like these (sorry about the axe). They’re all scratched and worn out in various places and also have gaps between them. I’m recently divorced and completely useless as my ex did all DIY/ building stuff and I know absolutely nothing at all but would rather die than ask his advice.

Basically - do you think these floorboards are salvageable? If so, how and who would I get to do it - carpenter, general DIY bloke, decorator etc.
If not, who should I ask to replace them? All the flooring companies I’ve looked at just seem to do carpets/ floorboards on top of existing floor iyswim. If you took up these floorboards there’s just framing and then about 2 foot drop to bare earth 😬.

Sorry, I know I’m clueless but if I get someone to come round I’m worried I’ll get the wrong person and they’ll either laugh at me or rip me off.

I’d sand them ( though very messy) and re- varnish. You might need to fill the gaps too.

If you bang the nails down that stick up you can then hire a sander and do it yourself.

But - personally I’d just buy lino and lay that over it to save myself the hassle. Blush

I’m not sure they’d take much sanding, they’re only a couple of inches thick at some points.

Thanks for the FB suggestion, looks great!

I’m concerned the floorboards aren’t strong enough to stand having Lino/ carpet put over them. Whenever my kids jump down the last couple of stairs it looks like they’re going to snap 😬.
