Nervous about tooth extraction!

ChocoLover7 · 27/04/2021 15:27

I cracked my pre-molar tooth last year and I've been putting off getting it extracted. The pain is excruciating, I take ibuprofen and paracetamol daily. I'm terrified of the dentist and definitely not looking forward to the extraction! How long will the extraction take? Is the pain really that bad afterwards? How do I avoid dry socket?!
So many questions but I'm so scared, I'm actually losing sleep over this

I am a proper woos at the dentist and yet I have found two extractions to be really quite ok. You can't feel a thing and the relief afterwards if you have been in agony. I find other dental work more stressful. You will be in and out and pain free.

I've only had one extraction and it was traumatic, but only because I worked myself up so much.

It was totally pain free as they numbed me right up then waited 10-15mins make sure everything was really numb before doing it. They didn't mind me asking for more anesthetic because I was nervous of any pain, the downside of this is your face will be numb for much longer after!

There was lots of tugging, wiggling side to side to loosen and a bit of cracking noises as it was a pretty bad tooth which wasn't pleasant to experience, but absolutely no pain. I don't remember it being sore after beyond needing more than paracetamol and had never heard of dry socket at that time (must not have had it).

I can think of better days out, but next time I will try not to get so worked up as that was a bigger problem than the actual extraction! I had to lie down for the rest of the day I was so wiped out by the adrenalin come down 😳.

Good luck, it wont be as bad as you think and your pain will be gone!

I can only give you my experience (I had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted). The top ones were move-move-move-pull and out (literally seconds). The ones below were more difficult because they grew sideways and partially under my other teeth so they had to drill them into pieces and then remove them. They should check if the painkillers numb you enough, if it's numb you so still feel them pulling and moving the tooth but it shouldn't hurt. One of mine wasn't totally numb (they didn't believe me and I was too young and not confident enough to speak up) and it did hurt when they drilled through it- for a few seconds. The pain afterwards wasn't too bad, I just took paracetamol but I did feel very tired afterwards. That could have come from getting too worked up beforehand though.

Thank you
I'll try not to get so worked up over it!

I understand as had my top wisdom tooth removed and got myself into a proper fluster about it. Reality is once you are numb you can't feel a thing and it's over quickly if it's only one tooth. Weirdest thing I found was the drooping of my fave afterwards, I literally had no control over it, such a weird sensation. But it was back to normal in no time. I know it's easy to say but it's really not worth all that worry, especially losing precious sleep over it. You'll be fine

Quirrelsotherface · 28/04/2021 17:44

Drooping of my face! Grin

Go and get it done ASAP. The longer you wait, the longer you're in pain and then you still need to get it done.

I had one out a few weeks ago and the worry was the worst bit. You'll feel pressure but not pain.

Afterwards be sensible for a couple of days - don't eat little things (no cous cous or rice) and do the recommended salt rinses. The dentist tols me that problems after extractions was extremely rare.

Pogmaasal · 28/04/2021 19:21

I had dry socket, and although it did really hurt, it eased off immediately after the dentist put the wadding in the hole. Dont worry too much, just go for it. You'll feel so much better after its done

Having a tooth out isn’t fun and the pain isn’t great after,

But at the moment the tooth ache pain is unpredictable, you can be absolutely fine and then wham, agony.

Yes you will be sore once it comes out but that’s healing pain which gets better quickly and is more of a dull ache rather than rather than horrible tooth ache.

Thelnebriati · 28/04/2021 21:25

I'll only have an extraction under sedation, if you have to pay its just over £200.

Dizzy1234 · 28/04/2021 21:53

Ooh I'm a complete baby when it comes to the dentist, I worry and work it up into a huge issue in my head then when I get there I'm practically fainting from fear 🙄 it's embarrassing.
Any way I recently had a wisdom tooth out, my dentist weighs about 7st dripping wet, never thought she'd even have the strength to remove a tooth, plenty of pain relief and a couple of minutes later its out, voila.
You'll be fine op
Ps one time I did a wee in the dentist chair 😉

I've had two wisdom teeth extracted. One beginning of last year and the other one this year. They were both falling apart. Hadn't been to the dentist in over 7 years because I'm petrified of the dentist!

The dentist told me that the extraction would take less than a minute and he wasn't lying! They properly numbed the area first and there was a little pressure but zero pain. They'll give a gauze pad to bite down on which I think they recommended you keep in for an hour even though I kept mine in for about 2 hours. They'll also give you an extra pad just in case you continue bleeding then you put the second in to bite down on.

I did feel some discomfort after the numbness wore off but wouldn't necessarily say that I was in an uncomfortable amount of pain. But I would recommend having a supply of pain killers on hand.

Also have some nice soft food to eat afterwards but nothing cold like ice cream of anything piping hot. Stick to soups, scrambled eggs, mashed potato etc.

You shouldn't rinse in the first 24 hours but afterwards gently rinse with salt water, especially after you eat to keep it nice and clean and free from any food that's gotten into the extraction site. And don't smoke, drink alcohol, drink any fluids through a straw or eat anything sharp for a few as these things can dislodge the clot and cause a dry socket.

Hope everything goes well and wishing you a speedy recovery 💐

I'm sitting here having had two bottom molars out Saturday ( and a filling above). The wisdom tooth came out easy, the one next to it not so much. The pain was been pretty bad, esp as I wasn't getting any pain before hand so no counter relief. Been taking Co codamol and Ibuprofen, using ice and heat packs. The pain killers just dulled the pain for the first 3-4 hours, then I've had to wait until I could take the next dose. That is the fun part.

If it had just been just the one site of pain it would have been ok, but it was all down the right side, from under the jaw, the extraction site, ear ache and headache, all normal for a lower back extraction.

I now just have the extraction site ache and a bit of an earache. Use warm salt rinses after you eat from the next day on. I rinsed a lot.

I haven't eaten a lot since Saturday, just enough to line the stomach while taking the ibuprofen. Things like Banana, soups, smoothes, prawns, feta and cucumber without skin. I've lost 5kgs, which I can afford to, if you can't afford to, you might need to up your food, just be aware of food debris getting in the wound. I didn't feel like eating because of the pain and wanted to reduce the dry socket risk as much as possible.

DancingInTheDaffodils · 04/05/2021 14:12

I've just had a tooth extracted, packing is still in and I'm a little scared to take it out!

Will keep taking paracetamol and rinse with salt water am hoping that the flip side is some weight loss Grin
