Dealing with insomnia

almahart · 27/04/2021 09:56

I am peri menopausal, stressed by lots of things at home and in a new job.

How the hell can I manage my insomnia?!

I feel like I'm unraveling.

I've tried giving up alcohol, having only one coffee a day and not having my phone before bed but nothing's helping. I'm so so tired all the time

I couldn't have hrt, but failing that my lovely Dr prescribed me amitriptyline and it's been an absolute saviour. Might not be for you but worth a chat with dr if nothing else.

A slurp of night nurse on a Friday night can help (or whichever night you don't have to get up the next morning). Proper night nurse liquid, not a facsimile.

I second amitryptyline! Absolutely saved my life. I take half of a 10mg tablet and wake up feeling fresh as a daisy

I'm already on fluoxetine. Wonder if I should ask my GP about changing that to amitrypline

Have you considered a weighted blanket? Some think they would make them too hot (especially with hot flushes being part of the equation) but I don't find that it affects the temp at all and I use mine on top of my duvet. I always recommend trying them as mine has worked so well for me

Spottysausagedogs · 27/04/2021 11:25

Apologies its the daily fail

Reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, staying off phone ...that's really good 👏
Do you get any exercise? Could you squeeze in 30min cardio each day?

But perhaps you do need some meds... how good is your GP? Would you consider taking mht? For a lot of women it settles everything right down.

I'd like to know too, I seem to go through cycles of insomnia.

I do sleep better though when I've had fresh air and exercise. I also try not to drink tea/coffee after 2pm but it's difficult to resist that pick me up!!

I've heard good things about Amitryptline too. Night Nurse doesn't work for me just gives me wacky dreams. My granny takes Nytol and swears by 2 paracetamol but doesn't work for me either.

Hope you have better nights soon OP.

I feel your pain OP. Insomnia comes and goes with me but when it comes it can be a week or two with waking at 2 or 3 in the morning and not getting back to sleep. I then have a good week of sleep and then it's back to the waking up for another two weeks or so. I don't drink tea/coffee/alcohol so can't cut it out and I still get insomnia so think it's just a late 40's thing.
I definitely find that if I've had a busy day physically, then I sleep a bit longer or if I do wake, then I can go back to sleep by 4ish.
I find that it doesn't help if it's coming up to a full moon - (which has been this week) and there not much you can do about the moon.
