I feel like I have to do this everyday. I’m now experiencing itchy ears which is apparently due to over cleaning

Following.

Beatinghearts · 27/04/2021 07:23

I was just wondering if what I’m doing is really bad for them.

Same here. It's a vicious circle.

I've been putting a healing cream (octinaire?) in my ears. It seems to smooth them and settle down the itching. Takes a while though. And you have to be really disciplined about leaving the cotton buds alone!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/04/2021 07:32

Ears are self cleaning for the most part, just stop doing it

altlife · 27/04/2021 07:33

Use olive oil drops (or olive oil from your kitchen if that's easier). It helps remove wax and stops the itching

vestastilly · 27/04/2021 07:37

I clean my every day and have done for ever! To stop itchy ears you need to use head and shoulders shampoo and just carefully wash the outer ears with it.

picklemewalnuts · 27/04/2021 07:38

As someone with chronic itchy ears, 'just stopping', or 'using olive oil' doesn't cut it.
It's unbearable. I got an infection from scratching. It's like itchy eczema.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/04/2021 08:26

I have eczema and can stop myself scratching. If I inadvertently go to scratch I check myself and stop. I also have ear problems so know what you mean about the itch but you can train yourself not to do it. We all know scratching makes skin conditions worse.

TheChosenTwo · 27/04/2021 08:28

I do mine every day, I love the feeling!
Never had itchy ears though Confused I don’t know which part of your ear you’re referring to?

Justbetweenus · 27/04/2021 08:32

I have had dry-itchy ears for the last year. I think it’s related to perimenopause and general hair/skin dryness. Doctor gave me steroid drops to use occasionally which helps the symptoms but doesn’t fix it. Eventually I’ll start HRT which I’m hoping will cure it.

ittakes2 · 27/04/2021 08:45

I have the same urge but unfort you really need to stop as cleaning does make the itching worse.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 27/04/2021 08:58

Ears are generally self cleaning.

When you say you clean your ears, what are you doing and what products are you using?

DinosaurDiana · 27/04/2021 09:00

I clean mine twice a day with a bud. If I didn’t they would itch.

picklemewalnuts · 27/04/2021 09:03

How old are you Diana? That's what I used to do... I had to go cold Turkey on cotton buds after a trip to A&E to get a tip out.

I have to break the scratch itch cycle with cream.

It all kicked off at the perimenopause/thyroid deficiency point though, so could be that too.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 27/04/2021 09:07

Using cotton buds in your ears is really not good for you.

I suspect they would itch because you over clean them so much.

Chatanooga1 · 27/04/2021 09:14

Ear Calm is very good at temporarily stopping the itching.

At night I put Vaseline on my little finger and apply around the entrance of my ear hole as that really helps to prevent soreness.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 27/04/2021 09:18

It can be an allergy. Since I gave up dairy, my ears (wax and eczema in the ear canal) has completely gone.

Oh behave! As if it’s just as easy as ‘don’t scratch’.

Can’t be that bad if, for example, you’re not scratching yourself raw in your sleep and waking up with blood everywhere. Luckily mine is well controlled at the moment but I’ve been there and being told just to ‘stop scratching’ was really not helpful at all.

Sorry for the detail @Beatinghearts but that irritated me.

RebelByLight · 27/04/2021 11:35

You’re supposed to clean ears ShockBlush Do you mean behind them or actually inside them? I’ve never cleaned inside my ears! Neither have I ever cleaned the DC’s. is this something I should be doing?

dontgobaconmyheart · 27/04/2021 12:32

What part of the ear are you referring to OP? Itchy inside the ear canal, or the skin on the outside of the ear? Quite different things.

What cleaning routine are you doing?

If it is the ear canal that's itching I would assume ear wax is to blame. Has the GP looked down the ear to check whether it needs syringing?

I wouldn't put anything in the ear canal tbh, though I do give behind my ears/neck and the external skin a quick wipe with a flannel when in the bath for cleanliness sake, but never in the ear.

emmathedilemma · 27/04/2021 12:36

your ears are like your fanny, wash the outside only and the rest should take care of itself. If it's the outside that's itchy then see your GP as it's probably eczema / dermatitis related.

Purplewithred · 27/04/2021 12:38

"You shouldn't put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow". If you want to know what happens if you 'clean' your ears with cotton buds every day here you go.

Not for the squeamish:
