Prom outfit for boys?

MindTheBumps · 26/04/2021 21:39

What do teen boys wear for prom these days? DS school is hoping that the prom is going ahead. He is my first teenager and I literally have no idea what kind of thing boys wear?

A tux?

jellybe · 26/04/2021 21:42

Boys at the schools I've taught at go for suits normally some times three piece.
Though others don't- what is his style? What does he want to wear?

Sparklingbrook · 26/04/2021 21:42

My two just had a suit with a waistcoat. Nothing ££££s around prom time all the clothes shops selling suits have prom deals on.
We ended up in Top Man for DS1 and House of Fraser for DS2. I just passed them over to the staff.

Aprilshowersandhail · 26/04/2021 21:48

H & M had a deal on for £99 when ds had his a few years ago. Trousers, and jacket...
And a choice of shirt and tie for £19.99.

MindTheBumps · 26/04/2021 21:48

He has no opinion on clothes, we have regular stand offs when he needs new clothes and literally just wants me to pick him something. He wore the exact same trainers just a size up for years until I insisted he got something else.

Was hoping to get something online and avoid the shops. ASOS carry top man that sounds promising.

Might be worth a look. Came across them while looking for DD. Sizing is small apparently.

Etsy had some decent stuff for a bit more. Linen suits for example so you might get use out of the trousers over the summer or the jacket with a pair of jeans for a lunch out somewhere smart. Year 6's in tux's / velvet soling jackets and ballgowns is just plain weird though

Sleepingdogs12 · 26/04/2021 23:26

It is a few years ago but mine wore new black jeans , new white shirt (they chose the style) , one had a waist coat and another preferred a black jacket. Teemed with DMs . Looked smart and cool and most bits could be worn again.

skeemee · 26/04/2021 23:37

Next make slim/skinny fit suits in all shapes and sizes. I ordered about 4 different sizes of jacket/trousers to mix n match and just returned the items that weren’t quite right. 3 piece suits were in, so matching waistcoat too. Sure it was under £100 for everything. Look in their “sale” area on the website as they have loads of suits on there.

RampantIvy · 26/04/2021 23:41

The boys all wore suits at DD's year 11 prom 5 years ago. I would hang on and make sure it really is going ahead before you spend £££.

TheSmallAssassin · 26/04/2021 23:47

We bought a suit, thought it would be handy in general, it was an excuse to buy a decent belt, shirt, tie, leather shoes, too. That's what most of the other boys seemed to be wearing.

ArcheryAnnie · 26/04/2021 23:53

Mine wore a fancy three piece suit that he loved. I bought him a fancy weird pocket watch to go with it, and he looked the business.

His mates wore a range of outfits - from a very loud primary-coloured suit (which won a prize for fanciest outfit!), to tuxes, to regular suits. They had to wear suits in sixth form, so most at least already had one.

weegiemum · 26/04/2021 23:56

Here (Glasgow) it's wall-to-wall kilts. Makes it much easier!

MindTheBumps · 27/04/2021 14:23

Thanks everyone, suit it is, we have a wedding coming up too so hopefully it will get worn again.

Do you really have to support this awful heteronormative US tradition? Single use clothing is a form of fast fashion and part of the second largest contributor to climate change. There are families who are struggling to put food on the table, and many whose income is uncertain given the pandemic.

At least if you do the clothes you are buying will be worn again it seems.

ArcheryAnnie · 27/04/2021 17:03

newnortherner111 you make some good points about the US terminology (end of school party is as good a term as any, I suppose), but the others needn't be the case, depending on the school.

Heteronormative? The kids at my DS's school didn't go in straight couples, just as individuals. There wasn't a king and queen of the prom, because that would've been seen as cringe.

Single-use? You have a point about the dresses, but the suits were not single use. My DS went to his prom at the end of Y11. In Y12 and Y13 they were required to wear suits every day, as they no longer wore uniform. My DS used prom to debut the fancier of his two school-worn suits. It will be wheeled out again for weddings and funerals.

my prom dress wasn't single use. it had been worn previously by my older cousin at her prom and she gave it to me to wear for my prom and then went on to wear it to balls at uni. suits are even less likely to be single use.

Yes, DS wore a kilt, though we were in Essex Grin . The DBs.
CurlyMango · 27/04/2021 20:57

Three piece suit. Not a tux, that’s try hard around here.

Wobbitcatcher · 27/04/2021 21:00

In my school they mainly wore skinny trousers an inch too short and pointy shoes with no socks. There were also quite a few with perms (just on the top) especially for the occasion. I wish I was making this up Confused

MindTheBumps · 27/04/2021 22:09

The perm thing is around here too. Luckily DS has shoulder length straight hair.

I don't think preventing my DS from attending his prom which has become a right of passage would go down well, especially on the basis that I don't like the term that that has been used for many years in the UK despite being adopted from the US.

The suit will definitely have more uses than just one! Depending how quickly DS grows of course.

BackforGood · 27/04/2021 22:26

I've 3 dc who've gone past both proms (end of Yr11 and end of Yr13) and lots of nieces and friends have shared photos. I've only ever seen lads wearing suits - some with a bow tie, others with an ordinary tie.

What an odd post @newnortherner111 Hmm

Why do you think a suit would be single use ? Confused
Many lads then have to wear a suit as 'business dress' in 6th form if they don't grow another 4 inches over the Summer. My ds managed to wear his suit to a christening and to a wedding, and also a funeral within 5 weeks around his prom. We then passed it on to someone else who no doubt got some wear out of it.

I don't even know what you mean by this :
this awful heteronormative US tradition - could you explain for me please ?

Sparklingbrook · 28/04/2021 06:16

I just supported my two DC on going to a celebration of leaving school. 🤷‍♀️ They wanted to go. If it was this year during the pandemic I still would have supported them. What a strange post.
gollymissdolly · 28/04/2021 06:40

My DS wore a kilt to his prom as did the majority of the boys.
It was either kilts or tartan trousers.
No prizes for guessing we're in Scotland !

I hope it wasn't a 'single use' kilt Grin
