I want to cover 97.5 square meters of garden in decking tiles.

Each tile measures 30 x 30cm.

How many tiles do I need please before I throw the bastard calculator at the cat and burn the fucking garden? 😐

Got any graph paper? DH got 14* different results using various calculators when we turfed the lawn, I was closest with my diagram.

(* I may have exaggerated slightly for effect)

Mykittensaremyfriends · 26/04/2021 21:44

Are you sure you've calculated the square meterage correctly as that is a large area and you'd need 1083+ tiles?

TodayImostlyhaveaverucca · 26/04/2021 21:45

What number are you getting? As pp I would suggest sketching. I’m getting about 1000 tiles (give or take 20 or so) but that doesn’t feel right.

TodayImostlyhaveaverucca · 26/04/2021 21:46

And that’s why it doesn’t feel right! It is a big area for quite small tiles.

Gwenhines · 26/04/2021 21:47

Does your garden area measure roughly 10m by roughly 10m? That's quite a large area for decking. Did you measure right?

Milomonster · 26/04/2021 21:47

1083 tiles.

DancesWithDaffodils · 26/04/2021 21:48

How good are you at cutting tiles?
What are the actual dimensions of the area you want to cover?

1083 as a minimium. More, depending on how the tiles fit the dimensions, and how many tiles cut neatly, and how many cut parts you can use elsewhere.

dementedpixie · 26/04/2021 21:49

What's the length and width of the area?

Cocksinsocks · 26/04/2021 21:49

100 square metres? In decking? That's bigger than my two bed two bath large terraced flat!

Gwenhines · 26/04/2021 21:49

But yes
97.5m / (0.3m*0.3m) = 1,083.3333333333 tiles
So 1084

TheRavenNevermore · 26/04/2021 21:51

Jeez - how much is each tile? Grin

Reconsidering yet Worra?

HarrietLong · 26/04/2021 21:52

Sorry to derail, but I am confusing myself.....

How can 0.3m x 0.3m be 0.09m squared? I understand that area equals length times width, but how does it work when multiplying numbers less than 1??

WorraLiberty · 26/04/2021 21:53

Oh bloody hell I think I've clearly made a massive mistake! 🤭😂😂

The garden is 48 feet long and 25 feet wide if that helps Blush

My two-storey, three-bedroom semi-detached house is 101m2.... That’s going to be a huge deck!

Yeah just a bit 🙈 😂

Cocksinsocks · 26/04/2021 21:55

48 x 25 feet is still a massive amount to deck! Are you decking the whole garden?!

Gwenhines · 26/04/2021 21:56

@HarrietLong you are multiplying to decimals.
So try to think of it multiplying like this...
Starting number X number bigger than one. Answer is bigger
Starting number X 1. Answer is equal to starting number.
Starting number X number smaller than one. Answer is smaller than starting number.

DancesWithDaffodils · 26/04/2021 21:57

So, you want a deck 14.63m by 7.62m?? I make that 111.48m2....

Anyway, assuming you cant reuse cut tiles, you need 48.7 tiles across, and 25.4 tiles back.
49x26= 1274 tiles, plus some spares for mistakes.

WorraLiberty · 26/04/2021 21:57

Yes more or less.

We were going to lay patio slabs because the dogs have ruined the lawn but we thought it might be cheaper/easier with composite decking tiles.

Gwenhines · 26/04/2021 21:59

@HarrietLong also.
Think of 0.3 as 3 / 10.
So
0.3 X 0.3 is the same as
(3 / 10) X (3 / 10)
0r
(3 X 3)/ (10x10)
So
9/100 = 0.09.

There's loads of YouTube videos that will explain it better than that though

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 26/04/2021 22:05

That's a massive area. Either decrease the area by adding something else or get bigger tiles. With your numbers, 111.5 (leaving room for error) divided by 0.09 is 1238 tiles.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 26/04/2021 22:05

30cmx30cm is approx 1ft2 so you'd need 48x25 = 1,200. Roughly.

Skittles98 · 26/04/2021 22:05

B&Q says you need 1363 (your garden is 14.63m by 7.62m, which is insanely big - are you sure that's right?)

Bimblybomeyelash · 26/04/2021 22:09

There has surely got to be a better solution than covering the whole garden in plastic?
